Our School's Mission
Our School's Why
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families, Caregivers, and Scholars,
Happy New Year! Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season with loved ones and remained in good spirits. The holidays represent a great time to take a break from the first half of the school year, with the new year bringing an opportunity to reflect on the first half and get ready for the second!
As we move into the second semester, I would like to reminder everyone that all scholars are currently on a 3-week break and all scholars, including grades 11 and 12 are to return to the Main Campus on Tuesday, January 16th for a whole-campus day. The MetroHealth site will be closed. However, the main office will open on Monday, January 8th for parent visitation and phone calls during our normal business hours of 8:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
When students return, they will be entering our 3rd quarter and the beginning of our second semester. As you know, all scholars must pass all classes, pass the state exams, and earn graduation seals in order to be considered on-track for graduation. After semester 1 ended, we observed having only 24% of our scholars on track for graduation and we need your help. Here are the things that every scholar must do to ensure they get on track for graduation:
- Attend school daily, arrive on time, and stay all day. Often times, our scholars are either arriving late, missing their first period class; or leaving early, missing out on their last 1-2 classes. This is one of the biggest ways our scholars are falling off track.
- Complete credit recovery. Our juniors and seniors have the opportunity to get back on track through the completion of credit recovery which is offered through classes where they get the support they need. However, many of them are not engaging in getting their courses completed even though we are halfway through the school year.
- Sit for and pass all state exams, including retakes. Meeting the competency score of 684 on the ELA II and Algebra I exams. We need our scholars to utilize IXL to help them fill in their own learning gaps independently and be prepared for classes and the tests to meet the required scores.
- Taking advantage of certification and seal opportunities. Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to apply to programs such as STNA certification to earn one of the readiness requirements. All 10th graders get certified in CPR which is another seal they can earn toward the college and career readiness.
By having our families understand these requirements and working with their scholars to help them understand, it will allow you to work with your child and with the school to ensure your scholar gets on and/or stays on track and will be ready for graduation.
On a more positive note, we will be having our 2nd Student Award Ceremony on Friday, January 26th to celebrate the accomplishments of scholars who have exemplified being a Learner, a Leader, and a Citizen. All families are welcomed to join us for this event that is held in our cafeteria from 12:40pm - 1:40pm. We enjoy these times as we have the opportunity to celebrate our scholars who feel a sense of pride in what they have done for the quarter and bring optimism into the next quarter!
As always, we appreciate your commitment and continued partnership in making every LWSH scholar successful! For more information, feel free to call the school at 216-838-7100.
Sincerely,
Juliet King
Your Proud LWSH Principal
