The Charger Chronicle!!
Nov 15th to Nov 19th.
Welcome our New Principal Mrs. Tonya Haddox!
From the Principal's Desk!!
Hello PTAA North Dallas family!
I am so excited to be a part of this growing family. I am Tonya Haddox, the new Principal of this campus. I am in year 24 in education--I love hanging out with kids! I was a math teacher for 14 years before I became a school administrator. I have been happily married for 22 years to David and have 3 children (Haley, 19, Dawn Rae, 15, Karsen, 13).
My philosophy is that every child can learn. I am a firm believer that every child is a genius and every child struggles. We must focus on their strengths and teach them to work through their weaknesses. Struggle is a great learning tool! I do not believe in perfection-we will all make mistakes and must learn from them. I am a firm believer of restorative practices. I believe in talking through issues and asking "What were you doing? What should you be doing? How are you going to fix this?" I am also a strong believer in community service--many life lessons can be learned from assisting others.
I look forward to working with all the North Dallas families and growing this campus. The best way to reach me is by email. I am so thankful to Mr. Mathew for all his assistance and support in this transition. He will still be around and will forever be a part of the ND Family!
Tonya Haddox, M. Ed.

PTAA North Dallas-Sugar Free Campus?
Need your help and co-operation in being a sugar free campus-this will benefit our children!!
While we all are generally aware that a diet high in sugar can lead to diabetes and obesity, did you know that it can also negatively impact your child’s development? Some studies have found that children with high sugar diets are more likely to engage in conflicts, have behavioral issues at school, and perform relatively poorly in school.
If these theories are true, then a diet free of sugar may be ideal for children, especially as students move through their formative years in public schools. Subsequently, some public school leaders have banned overly-sweetened foods for their students on campus. Remarkably, many of these “sugar-free” schools have reported significant changes and positive benefits!
Friendly Reminder: Is your child or children in proper uniform?
We need your help!!
- Uniforms help to create a positive school ethos (culture or spirit), foster a sense of belonging and school pride;
- Schools with uniforms produce better educational results by eliminating distraction and focusing student attention on learning.
- The uniform is a social leveler – equal dress without regard to background or income reduces negative peer pressure and potential bullying.
- Uniforms have practical advantages for parents and students. Students and parents don’t have to spend time deciding what to wear at the start of each school day. The clothes are designed to be comfortable and safe, with no long trailing sleeves, skirts or hoods to catch on dangerous equipment in PE or science lessons.
- Uniforms are more economical for parents than wardrobes subject to fads and the higher price tags that accompany them. The School’s dress standards are designed to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, minimize safety hazards, while providing flexibility for the parent and student. Students must come to school cleanly and neatly groomed and wearing the clothing prescribed in the Uniform Code. Students are required to arrive in proper attire every day.
Ms. Thompson's 4th & 5th grade Math
4th Grade:
Students continued to work on single-digit and double-digit multiplication.
Students created their own word-problems, and showed a variety of ways to solve it including a model, expanded form, and multiplication with regrouping, otherwise known as regular ol’ multiplication. Their visuals were so creative!
Students worked in groups to find the AREA of their desks and the combined area of their desk configurations.
5th Grade:
Students learned how to divide fractions by whole numbers and vice versa.
Students created their own word-problems for fraction multiplication or division and included a model. Their visual products were also quite creative!
Many also learned why “keep-change-flip” works with fraction division. Tricks and processes are great, but understanding why they work is more important.
HOW CAN YOU HELP AT HOME?
4th and 5th Grade:
Continue to work on multiplication facts. Multiplication Wars is a fun way to do it!
4th Grade:
We will soon begin DIVISION! This will include good ol’ long division as well as models. At home, you can talk about dividing whatever you can...money, candy, chocolate bar, pizza, time watching football, etc.
5th Grade:
Remind your child about the importance of symbols in mathematics. Math is a precise language, and equations without operations or equal signs are big no-no’s
