Principal's Message
What a great week we’ve had at KMS! Having 90% of our students back for full in-person learning makes it feel like we’re in a real school again. While we are still socially distancing and wearing our masks, the vibe at KMS is so positive and upbeat. Teachers are teaching and kids are learning. It’s been great hearing the sounds of students laughing, shouting, and just being kids.
If something positive has come out of the past year or so, it’s that I have seen a change in the way our young people are treating one another. I see daily random acts of kindness among the students. I hear “please and thank you” all the time. Students are kind, respectful, and caring. They follow the rules and support each other. KMS is truly a very special place and this is due to the support each of you give your children. Thank you for all you do for our school community.
Speaking of being a special place, I need to send all of our students, faculty, and staff a big thank you for acknowledging that May 1 is Principal’s Appreciation Day. My students have sent me cards, emails, and notes just to say thank you. I am humbled and honored to be the principal of such a wonderful school community. Our students are such outstanding young people and it’s a joy to work with them.
Report cards have been published this afternoon. If you have any questions with a grade, please contact your child’s teacher.
Wishing you a great week,
Dennis Morrell
Principal
Thank You to All of our Teachers and Staff!

Reading Ambassadors
A group of high-powered readers are leading the way at KMS by welcoming incoming 5th grade students! Kara Pisasale, Austin McCarty, Ellie Donovan and Samantha Campbell are sharing their reading expertise with 5th grade students from Colt Andrews to help students make great selections for their summer reading. Mrs Sousa, who teaches 6th grade ELA, is proud of their initiative and enthusiasm for great books! Research shows that students who read-succeed!
Students looking for a great book to read this coming summer will find their recommendations on the KMS website in June. The librarian, Mrs Galipeau, and ELA Curriculum Coordinator, Mrs. Bernard will also post information on KMS website, in June.
Samantha, Austin, Ellie, and Kara have excellent book recommendations for students in grades 6-8!
Solve for Tomorrow
2020-21 has been a challenge! The KMS Solve for Tomorrow team sees community concerns as an opportunity to innovate and make the Ocean State a safer place.
Team members were interviewed by WPRI-TV Channel 12 News on Tuesday, April 27th. These KMS problem-solvers designed a fully functioning mobile app to inform and warn the public about dangerous rip currents. Their app harnesses live buoy data to help beach patrons use wave height as a warning for rip current activity. The app provides excellent information about spotting, avoiding, and surviving a rip current emergency. In addition, these engineers built a rescue device that uses air pressure to launch a float 50 feet across waves to a distressed swimmer.
The Samsung Corporation is sendind KMS students Charlotte Arsenault, Jacob Betres, Hazel Bradley, Marissa Cabral, Samantha Campbell, Luke Daniel, Ellie Donovan, Elizabeth Dunlop, Lucy O'Brien, Lily Parisi, Brigitta Reich, Zahra Sheikh, Avery Walsh, Eliza White and their coaches Mary Cabral and Pat Fillipino with a $15,000 prize package to recognize innovative solutions.

Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series
Rhode Island PBS Education Services is excited to announce the Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series! Presented in both English & Spanish, in collaboration with RI Kids Count, Massachusetts Strategies for Children and RI & MA SEIU Education and Support Fund, SSIC’s goal is to support parents, caregivers and community providers with FREE tools and resources from Sesame Street that help increase successful outcomes for children, both in school and in life. Participants receive a complimentary Sesame Street care package, along with a certificate for PD hours, approved by the Center for Early Learning Professionals.
This workshop is intended for adult caregivers, parents and guardians, not for participation by children. Please register for either our English or Spanish sessions. Project made possible with generous support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB.)
Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring
Our names are Julia Hasseltine and Eli Weisbord and we are two RI high school students who recently created Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring (RIVT.) Our vision for RIVT is to organize and provide free one on one weekly tutoring sessions between high school tutors and younger students, giving older RI students an opportunity to share their knowledge. We hope to create a network of students of all ages around the state of Rhode Island. Tutoring in all of the general elementary level courses and many middle school classes will be offered at the program’s launch.
The two of us are extremely excited to share this project and we hope that the program continues to grow until we can ensure that no motivated student is left without the resources they need to thrive intellectually. Please pass this on to anyone whom you feel could benefit from this opportunity!
Free Tutoring Opportunity Launching with Schoolhouse.world
Schoolhouse.world is a new online platform from Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, that matches students around the world with free tutors. The tutors provide small-group math and SAT prep tutoring for students in grades 6-12, building on the Khan Academy curriculum. Rhode Island is one of two state-level partnerships offering this opportunity to students across the state. Registration is now live on the All Course Network (ACN) and students can sign up here on EnrollRI. There is no deadline for students to sign up (though schools will still need to approve their enrollment via the ACN), no cost to LEAs or students, and no requirement to participate. Please help us spread the word to your students, teachers, parents, and communities! More information on the partnership can be found here.
