Updates for the Week

We hope you've enjoyed a good weekend that turned out less wet and windy than expected. Here are some updates for the week of October 3-7. You can find full details and updates from your child’s teacher below.

Thank you for your quick action with Friday afternoon’s early dismissal. We got everyone home safely and quickly, and it was a good test for us. We want to let you know that next Wednesday, October 5, is an early dismissal. We will dismiss school at 12:30. The YMCA will not operate the after school program on Wednesday. Please let your teacher know in advance how your child will be getting home.

We want to remind you that October 4 is a field trip money turn in day. Families have the option of the one-time $60 payment, two payments of $30 (October and February), or six payments of $10 each month (October through March, first school day of the month). Thank you to those who have already responded. If you haven’t already, please send your payment and intention to your teacher if you haven’t already. We know many families are waiting for the online payment option. We are still waiting for the online portal to be activated and will publish it as soon as possible. If you intend to pay online, please send your teacher a message and we will make sure to notify you when it is available.

We have several messages from our Wilkesboro PTO. The online store for school shirts and sweatshirts is still open through October 4. Please place your order by Tuesday if desired. All transactions can be done online, and your merchandise will be delivered directly to school. If you want to place a cash order, please message Mrs. Spears directly. You can visit the site directly -- https://stores.inksoft.com/wes_pto_spirit_week_2022/shop/home As a reminder, proceeds of PTO sales come back to directly support your child at school.

Later this week, PTO will launch its annual capital campaign. This campaign will fund immediate security and campus improvements for our school that will impact every student. We will share details later this week about how you can participate.

Please mark your calendars now for the Wilkesboro PTO Fall Festival which will happen on Thursday, October 20 from 5:00-7:30. This Wilkesboro tradition offers a fun evening at school for students, staff, and families. PTO is currently accepting donations of wrapped candy that will be given out as part of this event. Donations can be left in the donation bin in the front lobby or with the office.

October is a busy school month, but also a very rewarding one. We look forward to sharing many good October days together, and we appreciate your ongoing support and enthusiasm as we build a year of memorable learning experiences. Have a great evening!

Order WES Gear through October 4!

Our Wilkesboro PTO has school shirts, sweatshirts, and more available for sale for a limited time at an online store. You can visit the site directly -- https://stores.inksoft.com/wes_pto_spirit_week_2022/shop/home -- to place your order through October 4. All transactions can be done online, and your merchandise will be delivered directly to school. If you want to place a cash order, please contact Mrs. Spears directly. These popular items are great for our monthly spirit days. As a reminder, proceeds of PTO sales come back to directly support your child at school.

We Love Field Trips

Field trips are a special part of school, and we are excited for students to enjoy these learning experiences again. Field trips allow students to experience new environments, learn in unique places, apply skills learned in the classroom, and connect with the real world around us. Our teachers have planned 4 to 5 field trips for each grade level.

All students are included in field trips. We calculate the cost of field trips to include gas and driver pay for bus transportation and admission tickets. Costs are calculated based on every student participating. All students will ride on our bus transportation to field trips, and we will also provide regular free lunch (or snack) for students through our cafeteria. We invite parent chaperones to attend many field trips (separate cost for parents) but not all. Some trips, like those to the JAWCC, are required by Wilkes County Schools. Click here for full details about field trips for the 2022-2023 school year!

We are waiting for an online payment portal to be activated, and we will share that link as soon as it is available.

If you'd like to donate to help make field trips affordable for all, please contact our office at 336-838-4261.

We Need Volunteers!

We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.

1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org

2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).

3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.

5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.

Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.

Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.

We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.

About Attendance

School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
