Back to School Night
All parents/guardians are invited to join us for Back to School Night on Thursday, September 26th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. An optional meeting will be held in the library at 5:30 pm to provide parents/guardians an opportunity to review Health curriculum. Back to School Night is an opportunity to meet your child's teachers and learn about the curriculum and expectations in each class. Your child(ren) will bring home a flyer within the next two weeks. Parking is limited so please consider carpooling with neighbors. Additional parking is available on Vincent Street. Due to limited classroom space, students should not attend.
Mascot Reveal
A team of dedicated volunteers and design professionals have collaborated with students, families, and staff over the past six months on a rebranding project for ISB. One component has been the creation of an updated logo and mascot to better reflect the mission and values of the ISB community. Last week students had an opportunity to vote for their choice of 3 mascots and 2 logos. The winning designs will be revealed during an assembly this Thursday. Here's a peak at their options:
6th Grade Outdoor Science School
6th Grade Families, please visit the Outdoor School page on our school website for up-to-date information about ISB's Outdoor Science School October 7-10th. Please complete this form to let us know how your student will get home after they arrive at ISB on Thursday, October 10th.
2019-20 School Hours
School Day: 7:30 am - 2:05 pm
Supervision at school is provided from 7:00 am to 2:15 pm. Students should not arrive earlier or stay beyond the supervision time unless they are attending a club meeting or an appointment has been prearranged with staff. The library is open after school every day except Wednesday, from 2:15 - 3:15 pm.
The school office is open 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Parking Lot Safety
Student and staff safety is very important. Drivers are asked to drive is a safe, alert, and courteous manner, recognized that we have buses, student drivers, and pedestrians in our parking lots. Please use your turn signal to communicate your intentions to other drivers and pedestrians. Reserve the use of your horn for emergencies only.
Morning Drop Off
In the morning we have two primary drop off zones for AM arrivals. Once students are dropped off in one of the zones, use a turn signal and pull away from the curb to the outside lane. This allows other drivers to pull forward in the drop zone, increasing the number of students being able to arrive simultaneously. After 7:15 am, our near bus lane will be open for arrivals as well.
Please do not drop off students from the furthest lane in the parking lot, as students would have to pass between parked cars, then navigate a lane of traffic with no crosswalks.
If you use the Blanton Street pull off, please pull all the way forward to allow multiple simultaneous drop offs. For more information, including a map, please see Morning Parking Lot Safety
Afternoon Pick Up
Our district bus transportation must leave the parking lot at 2:10 in order for bus riders to make their connections at the neighborhood high schools. We will hold other vehicles until buses have exited the parking lot. Please use the three lanes to the left of the bus lane to pick up your students. Unless there is parking lot congestion, please pull to the right until your child enters your vehicle. Wait for your child in the vehicle, rather than parking and exiting the vehicle. When you have all riders, use your turn signal to pull to the left and forward. We dismiss each row, expecting drivers to merge within their row. Please use your turn signal to communicate your readiness to merge with other drivers.
If you use the Blanton Street pull off, please pull all the way forward to allow multiple simultaneous pick ups. Do not block the bike lane or parking lot exit for buses turning right on Blanton. One tip to avoid congestion is to plan your arrival at ISB at 2:10 or later.
PSAT Registration
Junior and Sophomore students are encouraged to sign up to take the PSAT test this fall. The PSAT is a standardized test of skills in reading, writing, math, and critical thinking. This is a National Merit Scholarship qualifying test and helps students to prepare for taking the SAT. ISB students will test on Wednesday, October 16 from 7:30 am - noon. To register you only need to submit payment of $25 to Ms. Meyer in the office (or pay online). Please see counselors Ms. Hirsch or Mrs. Muilenburg if you need a scholarship/waiver for the test fee.
IB Corner
ISB is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) world school, offering the Diploma Programme (DP) for grades 11 and 12, and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for grades 6-10. An IB education challenges students to think critically about their learning and how it connects to the world they live in. MYP teachers accomplish this by using global contexts, approaches to teaching and learning skills, and learner profile traits.
What are Learner Profile Traits?
The IB’s mission is to develop active, compassionate, and lifelong learners. The learner profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. These attributes are used in the daily operation of ISB, from daily lessons and interactions between the school community members, to discipline and developing school rules.
The IB learner profile represents 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools and are the foundation of all the IB programmes. These attributes can help the members of our school community become responsible members of local, national, and global communities. The IB Learner Profile embodies the traits students strive for as part of the IB programmes.
There are 10 Learner Profile Traits: Balanced, Caring, Communicator, Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Open-minded, Principled, Reflective, Risk-Taker, and Thinker. We want these attributes to be a part of our students throughout their learning journey and into adult-hood.
Learner Profile of the Month
This month, the learner profile focus is on being principled.
Definition: We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
