Counselor's Corner
February Edition!
Counselor Greetings!
Reflecting on the powerful words of Michelle Obama, we are reminded that courage has the potential to inspire others, while hope can truly take on a life of its own.
As we step into the month of February, let us embrace this spirit of courage. This month, we pay tribute to the strength and resilience of our black community members. Explore the rich history encapsulated in this newsletter and engage in conversations with your brother about how these events have shaped our perspectives today.
In addition to the insightful Black History Month content, you will also discover valuable information on choice sheets for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, exciting summer camp and job opportunities, and student grants.
Wishing you and your families a safe, fulfilling, and successful February!
Warm regards,
Mr. Mason Dover

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)
What is an HBCU?
The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation."
Check out the three articles below to learn more about HBCUs and their benefits to brothers.
Choice Sheets!
Brothers will select their choices for the 2024-2025 school year by February 9th via SchoolLinks. The brothers participated in an electives fair during January. This helped to inform them on what elective options they may see next school year.
The choice sheet below is to give you an idea of the options at BOMLA. All choices will be made via Schoolinks. There will be no paper choice sheets sent home.

TCU's Analytics Academy, Summer 2024
Data is everywhere – and when students understand data and the inner workings of companies’ use of data, then students are ahead of the game. To better prepare the next generation of leaders in data analytics, we invite students from the high school graduating classes of 2025 and 2026 to apply for the TCU Neeley Analytics Academy. This summer, the TCU Neeley Analytics Academy is July 7-12, 2024.
Hosted by the TCU Neeley School of Business, the Analytics Academy is a highly competitive, one-week residential program that provides high school students with hands-on experience and opportunities to learn and hone their data analytics and market research skills. Students who participate have the opportunity to earn a data analytics certificate at the conclusion of the academy!
Students will spend one week on TCU’s campus, living in residence halls and learning from top-ranked professors. They’ll learn:
- Data-driven Storytelling
- Data Visualization
- Clustering and Classification of Algorithms
- Modeling Techniques such as Regression
- Applications of Statistical Programs
- Exposure to Machine Learning and AI
