From the Principal's Desk
Dear Glen Grove Families,
I’d like to start this message by stating that the opening of the 2019-2020 school year was nothing short of fantastic. As I’ve been walking the hallways and visiting classrooms over the last three and a half weeks, I’ve observed students and teachers making connections and building strong classroom communities. The time, effort, and creativity our teachers put into planning for the arrival of our students was obvious. Our students have also been getting to know Mrs. Shefler, our new Assistant Principal, who has been a wonderful addition to our school community. She and I have been sharing leadership and functioning as a cohesive partnership with a common set of values and goals to better serve the students, families, and staff of Glen Grove School. I can say with certainty that the tone for another successful school year has been set!
Our fall assessment cycle is behind us, with all of our students having completed the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) testing in reading and math. Teachers use information gleaned from this assessment data along with other information to help them identify student strengths as well as areas of need allowing for the differentiated approach to instruction necessary to ensure all students learn and grow. Please note that your child’s individual NWEA scores will be sent home in the near future.
To begin to address our annual goal of helping students “demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal and school contexts” we have also begun teaching our students the content of the Glen Grove Student Handbook – a set of guidelines developed by student leaders. If you would like to review our school-wide behavior expectation with your child, you can do so by accessing this handbook by using the link provided on the “Students” page of our the Glen Grove School website. As you look through it, remember that our handbook was written by kids and for kids, so the children’s “voice” is evident throughout.
The start of the school year is also the perfect time to emphasize the importance of communication between the school and home, as effective lines of communication foster the partnership necessary for us to work together on behalf of your children. Please take a few minutes to review the important information reflected in the Frequently Asked Questions page located under the “Families” tab of the Glen Grove School Website, as consistency in adhering to the routines and procedures reflected there helps us maintain order and, above all, safety at school.
Social media is also influencing the way in which we communicate, and this year we’ve made a commitment to increasing our presence on both Twitter and Facebook. So, please do follow us on Twitter and Facebook to catch glimpses of the students throughout the day, and PLEASE also make it a point to like our brand new Glen Grove School Facebook page. We have set goals in these areas and appreciate your help in meeting them. To find us, please search for the following usernames and hashtags:
#glengroved34
@helena_vena
@stefshef
Finally, you are your children’s biggest advocates and we are your partners in their education, so please do not hesitate to phone or email me with any questions or concerns. Welcome back, and on behalf of all of us at Glen Grove, we look forward to another GREAT school year!
Respectfully,
Helena Vena

Using the NEW Library System
Students now have the opportunity to place up to 3 holds at any time on wanted titles. A student must be signed in to Destiny (the library catalog) in order to place a hold. When a hold is ready to be picked up and checked out, the student will see a red circle at the top left side when he/she is logged into his/her account. Students may also mark off favorite titles simply by clicking on the Favorite button when logged in to his/her account. It is a great way for students to keep track of the books they want to read in the future.
Parents, help your child return their library books on time so others may check them out.
5th Grade Author Visit
Chicago writer Kate Hannigan, author of A Lady Has the Floor and The Detective's Assistant, winner of the 2016 Golden Kite Award for Middle Grade Fiction is visiting the fifth graders on Wednesday, September 25 courtesy of The Book Stall in Winnetka. Ms Hannigan will be celebrating the release of her new novel, Cape, the first book in the League of Secret Heros series with us. You can learn more about the author and her work at www.katehannigan.com. If you would like to purchase signed and personalized copies of her books for your child, please see the order form below. Orders are due to the library by Tuesday, September 17. Books will be delivered to the students at school on the day of the visit.
Are you interested in volunteering? The Glen Grove library is looking for people to help shelve books, organize the Celebrating With Books program, decorate the window displays and other special activities. There is no experience necessary to volunteer. We will teach you all you need to know to help in the library. Volunteer once a week or once a month, it’s up to you! We welcome any and all the help that fits your schedule. If you are interested, please contact Lisa Funke, the librarian at lfunke@glenview34.org or call the school at 998-5030.

What's Happening in Physical Education?
What’s Happening In Physical Education?
Welcome back Glen Grove students and parents! We enjoyed meeting a few of you at Curriculum Night and anxious to meet more of you as the school year progresses. We are off to a fabulous start in PE this year. It is always nice to see returning students as well as getting to know the new ones.
There are two full-time Physical Education teachers. Mr. Preston Roberts and Mrs. Lori Marcotte are the full-time Physical Education teachers. They have been teaching together for fourteen years at Glen Grove. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions. Preston Robert’s email address is: prroberts@glenview34.org, and Lori Marcotte’s email address is: lmarcotte@glenview34.org.
We started off the school year reviewing procedures, expectations, and learning the routines for PE class. We are encouraging students to eat healthy and stay active outside of school.
We started the year off with the Frisbee Unit. We will be working on the skills of throwing and catching, as well as playing Ultimate Frisbee. Students will be given the opportunity to pick the field they are most comfortable with: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
Next up is our soccer unit. Students will learn how to dribble, pass with various parts of their feet, shoot, and perform throw-ins. Students will learn when to use either a corner kick or goal kick. Students will engage in several stations emphasizing the different skills of soccer.
During the morning PE classes, the grass field is generally pretty wet because of the dew. Students’ shoes and socks may get wet so please feel free to have your children bring an extra set of shoes and/or socks. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Please feel free to contact one of the Physical Education teachers. We look forward to working with you and for another exciting year in PE!

From the Nurse's Office
Students requiring any medications during school hours must file a medication form with the health office. This form requires a physician’s signature as well as a parent’s signature. This form can be found under the Parents Tab on the district website in the health and wellness file. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-the-counter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, Cough Drops, etc.
Just a reminder....if your child is out sick with a fever or vomiting please make sure they do not return to school until they are fever free or symptom free for 24 hours.
If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.
All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:55 a.m. at (847) 657-2394! The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.
Parent Visits and Our Security System
We welcome any parents who would like to visit our school and we ask that you:
- Please call your child’s teacher to arrange an appointment if you want to visit a classroom.

- Please sign out and return the lanyard when leaving the building.
- If you plan to take your child out of the building during school hours, please sign him/her out in the office.
