Hornet Health Tip: Head Lice
Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness nor do head lice transmit diseases.
Head lice pass from person to person by direct head-to-head contact or less commonly by sharing hats, brushes, scarves, combs, etc. that have been used by a person with head lice.
If someone in your family is found to have head lice or nits, everyone in the family and close contacts should be checked for signs of head lice. A special medicated shampoo or hair rinse must be used to kill head lice. Follow the directions carefully for the medicated shampoo or hair rinse. Regular shampoo will NOT kill head lice.
Clothing, bed linens, pillows, stuffed toys, etc. used by anyone with head lice must be washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer. Items that can’t be washed can be sealed in a plastic bag for 14 days or longer, dry cleaned, or dried in a hot dryer for 30 minutes. Car upholstery, carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture and mattresses must be vacuumed.
If you have any questions about head lice, please contact Jessica Hager, School Nurse, (715) 289-3795, extension 1503 or by email hagerj@cadott.k12.wi.us
