Description of the artwork
Venus in forge of Vulcanus
This fresco with mitological references was painted by Bernardino Luini in 1509-1510, and it’s housed, but not exposed, in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
In the foreground we can see Vulcanus, Venus and a support worker, who are working in Vulcanus’ forge, they are presumably making an armor, as there are already pieces of this one on the floor
Vulcanus is situated in the left part of the scene, he’s wearing a green cloth drape, which covers his left shoulder, a part of his chest and his back.
He’s holding a hammer with both hands, because he needs to beat a piece of iron, that is lying on a metal base situated over a rock.
In the middle of the working scene there’s a worker, who’s wearing a red dress, beating the piece of iron by using a hammer too, with both hands again.
In the right part of the scene we can see Venus; she has neither dresses nor cloth, she is working naked, with the other two men, holding the piece of iron with a tongs in her left hand, and she has a hammer in the right hand.
She has a curved back because her right leg is resting on a stone while she's working.
The background behind them is really dark and uniform, but if we look at the scene taking place over the three workers, we can see how the colours are bright again.
This is because of the white clouds and through these, all the pale bodies of the human figures, who are probably workers of Vulcanus’ forge.
