March 2022
A Word From Our Principal-Mr. Agee
Pacific Intermediate Families,
Second trimester has finished, and we are entering the last third of the year. I will spend the next few weeks reviewing student grades and sending additional information about either required attendance at summer school or retention.
Summer school registration is now open for the 2022 school year. Students going into grades 5 and 6 will attend Pacific Intermediate as well as students from Zitzman going into grade 2-4. Students who will be entering 7th grade will attend Riverbend.
We are also asking for your help with sending students with water bottles to the school. We have tried to provide water bottles, however, we have not been able to keep up with students who are coming to the office asking for them. Students may also purchase a bottle of water in the mornings from the cafeteria for $1 if they are unable to bring one from home. They must have money in their account in order to make this purchase.
We have an upcoming Pi Night at PI on March 14th. We will run the event from 3-5pm, and we would like to invite our families to have a piece of pie as well as tour our book fair. If you have additional questions about Pi night, please reach out to Mrs. Meyers at bmeyers@mvr3.k12.mo.us. If you have additional questions about the book fair, please email our librarian, Mrs. Henley, at lhenley@mvr3.k12.mo.us for additional information.
Spring break will be March 21st-25th. During this week, school offices will be closed and the staff will be unavailable. We hope students take the time to relax, turn in any missing work, and enjoy the outdoors.
Yours in education,
Matt Agee

5th Grade Math
Students will begin multiplying fractions. We will begin by using models to help students understand what is happening with the numbers. This is a 5th grade standard that students need to understand the modeling of multiplying fractions. We will then move into the traditional algorithm of multiplying fractions with a focus on putting fractions into lowest terms. This unit relies heavily on students knowing their basic math facts. If your child is still struggling with math facts, please help them at home using skip counting, flash cards, verbally quizzing them, games, or online games. We want the students using their brain power on understanding the concept instead of trying to figure out basic facts.
Thank you for all your support and please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any help at home!
5th Grade Language Arts and Reading
ELA is wrapping up plays and will be moving on to nonfiction text features. This will also be a part of our next vocabulary list. We will also be working on a National Parks research project during our nonfiction unit.
5th Grade Science and Social Studies
Science:
Students finished their Earth Science unit and have moved on to Physical Science standards. In this unit, students will be studying the properties of matter; and exploring concepts related to mixtures and solutions.
Social Studies:
Students continue to learn about the Civil War era and the Underground Railroad. Students will continue to move through history including WWI, The Great Depression, and WWII.

6th Grade Reading Teacher
Hello-
Hopefully, the coldest weather is behind us and we can look forward to the first signs of Spring! As always please continue to look for our weekly emails and to check your student's grades in SIS. Please make sure coats and hoodies are getting washed. Also, if you could please check with your child to see if they need any supplies (colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, pencils and pens). If you need anything please, let us know.
English:
In English, students are finishing up their argumentative essays, in which they determine whether or not zoos should exist. Students have been researching the topic and finding text evidence to support their opinions. The next step in this process will be for students to peer review, edit, and turn in their essays.
Math:
Math classes are learning to write equations in one and two variables and how to solve simple equations. The advanced math classes are on the last chapter of the 6th-grade book and will end the year with the first 5 chapters of the 7th grade book.
Social Studies:
Social Studies will be discovering classical Greek and Roman Civilizations over the next two months. The knowledge and politics of Greece and Rome directly impacts how our democracy works in the United States. Students will understand the connection between the history of the classical civilizations and the history of our own society.
Science:
We are wrapping up our Matter unit and will have a mini-unit on the Earth's Surface. We will finish out the year with the Ecology Unit. If your child is absent, all assignments are posted in Goggle Classroom so they can keep caught up.
Reading:
In reading, we will be enjoying Greek myths. First, we will be reading about the battle of Troy. Next, we will be reading the tale of Medusa. This will open us up to explore other myths that interest the students.
Pi Night at PI!
Parents please join us on March 14th from 3-5pm for Pi Night! Parents can get information on
PTO, clubs, shop at the book fair, and enjoy a slice of pie!
Scholastic Book Fair-Mrs. Henley
Dear Parents and Families:
We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. This event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school.
Our spring Book Fair will be a familiar, welcome, and safe event for our students. Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from March 11th-18th at Pacific Intermediate. Shopping hours are from 7:30 AM to 2:15 PM.
• Our Book Fair offers a cash-free payment option called eWallet. It’s a convenient digital account that your child can use for shopping at our Fair. Grandparents, friends, and others can contribute, too!
• If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop online at our school’s Virtual Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/pacificintermediate.
We’re excited to celebrate our love of books together at the Book Fair. We look forward to seeing your child there!
Happy reading,
Mrs. Henley
Counselor's Corner-Ms. Diamond
The month of March will be busy. Your child's Trimester 2 report card will be emailed on Tuesday, March 8th. Congratulations, in advance, to those students with good grades. Your parents and PI are proud of you. To students struggling with grades, do not give up. Success can happen through effort and change.
5th graders, last month for guidance learned and practiced "Setting Goals, Creating Plans to Achieve Goals, and Overcoming Obstacles" to reach their dreams. This month,5th graders will be tentatively registering for 6th grade, and we will discuss differences in expectations from grade to grade. This will help students be better prepared to transition to 6th grade. Additionally, Compass Health Network will be facilitating a two-day program at PI called "Violence Prevention" on March 8th and March 9th. The students will learn about the risks of the internet, how to recognize bullying behavior/cyberbullying, and how to take safety precautions to protect themselves. Finally, I will be in the classroom tentatively registering students for sixth grade and discussing differences in grade processes and expectations.
Last month 6th graders reviewed "Setting Goals and Creating Plans to Achieve Goals” and practiced this important skill again. We then took knowledge and discussed self-management and time management as a tool to reaching goals. Students were asked to identify time wasters which could be reduced and/or replaced with more productive activities to help them reach their goals.
This month McKenzie Ellis, Riverbend’s School Counselor, will be facilitating a lesson plan on transitioning grade levels and buildings to all sixth graders. She will discuss class elective options, and life at Riverbend Middle School. Students will tentatively register for 7th grade classes. Additionally, 6th graders will receive two guidance lessons from Compass Health Network’s “Changes and Choices” program. These were originally scheduled in February, but had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Finally, I will do a guidance lesson focusing on suicide prevention which will include statistics, factors, warning signs and actions one can take to seek help. By increasing awareness of a growing issue students can recognize warning signs with friends and themselves to seek help. Discussing suicide ideation does not increase the thought or action. By discussing mental health issues it helps the topic become less taboo and makes it acceptable to discuss, seek solutions and saves lives.
Have a great Spring Break. Enjoy time with your family.
Sincerely,
Jeanne M. Diamond
