Readers' Workshop~
- As readers, we learned more about scooping our words to make phrases. In doing so, our readying sounds more natural and fluent.
- We also learned that as we read, readers should stop and think about what they are reading. Stopping to retell and reflect on our reading helps build reading comprehension.
- During Readers' Workshop, we read and discussed Henry and Mudge. We learned more about Story Sequence of Event.
- While reading Henry and Mudge, we learned that the order of events in a story matter. We also learned about the difference between Infer and Predict. When we predict what will happen in a story, we read on and discover if our predictions are correct. However, when we infer, we make some decisions about what we are reading based on story clues and the author does not tell us directly the answer to our inference.
Writers' Workshop~
- As writers, we learned how to rewrite a story beginning by trying a different hook. For example, if we began our story by writing about the setting, we rewrote the beginning using a question, stating a fact, or onomatopoeia.
- Good writers rehearse what they plan to write by talking to a friend, jotting down notes, or telling a story across their fingers. So, we used a graphic in the shape of a hand to help us write our story ideas across our fingers.
- We learned that writers use transition words or time order words to help write their stories in the right order.
- During Grammar, we continued to learn more about Common and Proper nouns.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematicians, we learned more about making sums of 10. We learned to play a game called Fishing for 10, similar to the game Go Fish except you try to make combinations of 10.
- We learned how to find addends that total a given sum without using a specific number utilizing a method known as 'broken calculator.' For example: find the sum 25 without using the number 2 as a digit. 19 + 6 would solve this problem, however, 21+4 would not because the number 21 has the digit 2 in the tens place.
- To enhance our money skills, we learned about the Quarter and how to count by 25's to count groups of quarters.
- We also learned about odd and even numbers. We discovered that not only do even numbers always make pairs, but that even numbers always end with the digits 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 in the ones place. Naturally, odd numbers can not be put into equal pairs and they always end with a 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 digit in the ones place.
Science~
- As scientists, we learned that all things are made up of matter. The three states of matter include solids, liquids, and gases.
- We also learned that objects can be described by their properties ~ how an object looks or feels.
- Objects can be flexible, rigid, smooth, rough, flat, round, bumpy, stretchy, etc. They can also be made of wood, fabric, metal, concrete, etc.
Other Activities~
- Charlie Burton was our Star Student of the Week ~ we enjoyed learning more about Charlie!
- We celebrated the Week of Respect by reading and discussing various stories such as Chester and the Bully, Chrysanthemum, One, I like Myself, and Mean Jean the Recess Queen. We also listened to a video story of Wangari's Trees of Peace.
- On Tuesday, we visited with our 4L buddies and after reading and discussing Chrysanthemum, the children created anti-bullying posters to hang throughout the school.
- As a class, we attended our very first school community meeting!
- Congratulations to Olive Katulka for winning the Helpful Word of the Month Award.
- Thanks to our awesome behavior during our first 16 days of school, 2Mu received 25 compliments. Thus, we had our very first Reading Retreat. What an awesome time we had ~ be sure to check out the photos below.
