Ups, Downs, and Diagonals

Demetrius and Helena's Love, (from Helena's point of view)

Theme: Love is never straight forward, but it tends to work out in the end

Throughout the play A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, the playwright argues that love is unpredictable and never direct. However, he also displays that given time, it will work out in the end. Shakespeare starts out by having happily paired couples. But then parents get involved, a boy falls for the wrong person, a women gets desperate, a fairy finds the wrong person, and a love potion gets put into the wrong hands. Everything goes crazy, but this is natural in love. However, eventually everything gets straightened out, and these four lovers' paths get straightened out. Love leads them all astray, and turns friends against each other, but in the end, it all works out and everything goes ends up the way they had hoped it would.
Sara Bareilles - Love Song

Track One: Love Song by Sara Bareilles

I chose love song to be my number one track, because it seems to describe I time before William Shakespeare's masterpiece takes place, that is only mentioned in the story. The time when Demetrius and Helena were actually a happy couple. This was the time before Demetrius fell for Hermia. I think Helena would have sung this to Demetrius to tell him that she loves him, although he doesn't own her.

"Promise me, that you'll leave the light on, to help me see, with daylight my guide gone"

Although the song is not a perfect fit, the part above works out, because it seems to describe them hitting a rock in their relationship - Hermia. This is when Helena begins to realize that love is not as simple as it is in the storybooks.

Sam Smith - Stay With Me (Lyrics On Screen)

Track Two: Stay With Me by Sam Smith

This song is what I imagine Helena would listen to right after Demetrius decides that he loves Hermia. Although this part was not talked about in the play, I can literally see Helena pleading with Demetrius not to leave her. Or maybe serenading him with the lyrics of this song. The parts that go

"won't you stay with me, 'cause you're all I need, this ain't love it's clear to see, but darling stay with me,"

perfectly summarize Helena. They are saying that she wants him to stay even if it is not 'real love,' just for the sake of having him. This song was really the turning point. Here, Helena realizes that love is hard to get to, and that obstacles will stand in your way.

Rihanna Take a Bow - Lyrics ♥

Track Three: Take a Bow by Rihanna

I chose this song for Helena, because it is a song about being betrayed by someone you trusted and loved. I think Helena would have listened to this song after Demetrius fights to marry Hermia, even though that could have been Helena. She would have directed this song towards Demetrius, because she feels like he 'cheated' on her and betrayed her. The one difference is that this song is about a woman being strong, which is not how it played out for Helena. The lyrics like

"the best lie goes to you for making me believe."

seemed to describe how Helena was so in love until he turned on her. Although this song talks a lot about someone who does not want to take someone back, instead of the other way around, but the other themes are the same. This is when Helena realized that love can be ugly and cruel and unrequited love is painful and dark.

Taylor Swift - Better Than Revenge (with lyrics) HD

Track Four: Better Than Revenge by Taylor Swift

Better than Revenge seemed like the perfect choice for Helena. I think Helena would have listened to it right after Hermia told her that she and Lysander were going to run away. I can see the gears in her head turning and her thinking about how to get Demetrius to even look at her, even if it means screwing over her friend. When Taylor says the words

"soon she's gonna find stealing other people's toys on the playground won't make you any friends. She should keep in mind, she should keep in mind, there is nothing I do better than revenge,"

It seems to be summarizing how Helena seems to think that Hermia stole her man (so she's directing it to Hermia,) so she's trying to make Hermia pay by telling Demetrius they are leaving, in hope that he will also thank her. At this point, Helena seems to think that things are maybe starting to look better for her because Demetrius will possibly thank her.

Iggy Azalea - Black Widow (Vevo Certified SuperFanFest) presented by Honda Stage

Track Five: Black Widow by Iggy Azalea

I chose this song, because it just works out perfectly. It is talking about how, even though Demetrius hates her, Helena is still going to love him. When Rita says the words

"I'm gonna love you, until you hate me, and I'm gonna show you, what's truly crazy, you should have known better, then to mess with me, honey, I'm gonna love you, gonna love you,"

I can imagine Helena listening to it and deciding that she will obsess over Demetrius, even though he quite obviously despises her. This starts to show her unrequited love, and they go farther and farther down a path that doesn't seem to be working.

Stuck Like Glue - Sugarland (With Lyrics)

Track Six: Stuck Like Glue by Sugarland

I chose this song for Helena, because it accurately describes how Helena is stuck on Demetrius, even though he refuses to love her back. She probably would have listened to this song as she stalks Demetrius through the woods. The artist belts out the lines

"There you go making me feel like a kid, won't you do it and do it one time, there you go pulling me right back in," along with

"I'm stuck on you, stuck like glue, you and me baby, we're stuck like glue."

This part seems to show how Helena is so obsessed with Demetrius that she would probably sing this to him, and how she will run around a forest and offer to be beat for him. This part pushes Helena to be bitter and spiteful towards love because she cannot control others' feelings.

One Direction - Night Changes (Acoustic)

Track Seven: Night Changes by One Direction

I chose this song to represent how all four Athenians went to bed, and when they wake up, everything has changed. Helena's world has 'changed' over night, because what was once horrible, turns into exactly what she was hoping for, even though she doesn't believe it.

"Everything that you've ever dreamed of, disappearing when you wake up, but there's nothing to be afraid of, even when the night changes, it will never change me and you"

This part really seems to zoom at a little and describe all four Athenians. Everything that Hermia dreamed of with Lysander disappeared, but Helena's world was brightened, even though she did not believe it. I think she would have possibly directed these sentiments to both Hermia and Demetrius, because she is telling Hermia that everything she wanted is going away now, even though it is not what Helena necessarily wants. This part really seems to turn Helena's view of love away, because she believes that the two boys are mocking her, and being rude.

Apologize (Timbaland) Lyrics

Track Eight: Apologize by One Republic

I chose this as the song that Helena would listen to after she and Hermia get into a huge fight, because she believes that Demetrius and Lysander's new found love for her are a cruel prank and Hermia is making them do it. Helena is directing this song to Hermia, and showing her how it feels to be betrayed by someone you love. Although it is not perfect, and the words don't perfectly express it, when you listen to this song you hear how it's about someone being betrayed by a person they loved and trusted. That is Hermia and Helena's relationship.

"You tell me that you need me, then you go and cut me down"

Although the whole "apologize" theme did not really fit, the underlying theme of broken trust does work out quite well. I think that here, Helena decides that she hates love, and her trust is broken.

Walking On Sunshine /w Lyrics - Katrina & The Waves

Track Nine: Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves

I chose this song for Helena to listen to when she hears Demetrius confess to Theseus that he loves her and not Hermia. I could imagine her happiness upon hearing those words, and the lyrics of this song are perfect to what I feel like she would way to Demetrius after.

"I used to think maybe you loved me now baby I'm sure," and

"Now I'm walking on sunshine and don't it feel good!"

are two lines that I think describe how Helena feels. This is when she seems to realize that love has a way of working itself out in the end, and even through all the ups and downs, love will prevail.

Taylor Swift - Mine

Track Ten: Mine by Taylor Swift

I chose Mine because it perfectly shows how everything works out. Helena would probably have sung this song to Demetrius and told him that

"you are the best thing that's ever been mine."

Helena would listen to this song after Theseus decreed that the two could get married, and Demetrius claimed that he loved her. This shows Helena that even though love got pretty crazy, and went up and down, looked good and bad, and even went "diagonally," it still worked.
