Government

Their government was a direct democracy, meaning everyone who could vote was forced to vote. The leaders were male only and you had to be a Greek citizen and could not be a slave. Every year leaders were elected by voting. There was slavery in ancient Greece. the slave had no rights and couldn't vote. Two main wars were the Persian and Pelonniesian.

We have a democracy,

You can vote and are encouraged to vote once you are over the age limit. There are term limits on how long the leaders can be in that same position.

Mythology

Everything is a natural phenomena. Some of the hero's include, Achilles, Theseus, Odysseus, Perseus, Hercules, Jason. 10 of the most important gods include, Zeus- god of the sky, Hera- goddess of marriage, Poseidon- god of the sea, Demeter- agriculture, Ares- god of war, Hesta- god of the heart and home, Athena- goddess of wisdom and war, Aphrodite- love and beauty. A few authors of mythology, were Hyginus Apollodorus, Homer Aesop, and Gaius Julius. After death they believed that you went to the underworld.

We still see some Greek mythology in Percy Jackson, Hercules, in other books and we still are studying it.

Philosophy

Some of the major philosophers in ancient Greece were Heraclitus, Democritus, Plato, Chaldean, Socrates, Arstotal, Pyrrhic-elis, Plotinus. Some of the main ideas and beliefs of the 3 major philosophers were Heraclitus- universe was logos, Democritus- everything is made of atoms, Plato- everything is a phenomena. The two books that they wrote Iliads, and the Odyssey. An important question about life that they were trying to answer was how do we know something is what we think it is? The government was trying to kill them they feared the. They were treated very badly.

We still see doctors using the Hippocratic oath. We still use some of their math skills today like P.I. Dytha Goreum theorem and still studying geometry.

Sports

Only free males could play the Olympic sports. They could participate in running, jumping, the long jump, shot put, and javelin. The spectators of the Olympic games were men, Gods and Goddesses, unmarried women, and Government officials. The games started as a belief of the Greek society, they were meant to test, physical and mental discipline. the Gods loved to see strong and healthy people.

They were felt to be very important people.Today we still have the Olympic Games. We still have many of the same events that they had back then.

Architecture

Greek architecture is know for its columns. There are three types of columns: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian. Other types of Greek art include pottery, sculptures, paintings. Every city-state had a temple that was dedicated to a special god, the went there to worship and make sacrifices. some leaders like Pericles, and Alexander the Great spread the Greek architecture throughout Europe.

We see Greek influence today in important buildings, such as the Capitol Building, The White House, Supreme Court, and the Lincoln Memorial all have columns that reflect Greek architecture.
