A weekly update from Carleton Middle School.
Spring Break
We hope you all have a relaxing and restful Spring Break!
When returning to school after a few days away, we will embark upon MSTEP testing. We will be assessing our students in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies (all grades have slightly different requirements) and wish them well. It is often difficult for students to see the importance of doing well on these state assessments because the results are often very untimely and they do not see immediate feedback (dissimilar to formative or summative assessments in the classroom). We would like to impress upon our students the importance of doing well and trying their best so that we, as a school, can make important curriculum and teaching decisions based upon how our students perform.
Carleton Middle School (and WCS) will also receive a "report card" on how well our students are making growth on state level assessments and meeting proficiency targets on the MSTEP and MI Access. Students, take this opportunity to academically shine and show off all the knowledge and critical thinking skills that you have learned and perform your best.
Rest up over break and REACH for your best!
Clark's Corner
We've had quite the week at Carleton, even though it was a short one. On Saturday, our 7th and 8th grade girls' basketball teams played in a tournament against other WCS teams. Our 8th grade girls rallied from behind for a last second win over Carter Middle School and came in second place overall.
Spring is here and therefore Track and Field is right around the corner for our students. Sign up for 7th and 8th grade track started this week during lunch. Students must have a physical on file to participate. Physical forms are available in the main office.
Our Booster Club organization organized a new event that allowed 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to compete in an after school Dodge Ball Tournament. This was a very fun event where great sportsmanship, a competitive drive, and good entertainment were present.
We were fortunate enough to meet many of our incoming 6th graders at our 5th grade orientation and Title I meeting on Tuesday evening and hosted our Spring pep assembly on Wednesday. Through the generous donations from our students, the Detroit Dog Rescue received a check from Carleton for $550 to help benefit the only "no-kill" shelter in Detroit.
The best thing about all of these events is that we have seen a tremendous number of our students participating, having fun, and building positive friendships. As we head into break, we encourage you to talk to your son or daughter about how they are involved in their school community and how they would like to be involved in the future. Whether it is band, track, art club, game club, peer to peer, or another activity, becoming an engaged member of their school community helps students build the social and emotional skills that will serve them in life.
Important Dates
MSTEP testing will begin on Monday, April 9th for 8th grade students. If your student would like to bring their own headphones or ear buds that would greatly help with facilitating our state assessment.
We will also have a booster meeting on Tuesday, April 10th at 6pm in the Media Center. If you are an 8th grade parent and would like to help plan, chaperone, or learn about our 8th grade farewell, please consider attending.
Eighth graders that will attend Cousino next year should plan on attending an 8th Grade Parent/Student Night in the CHS Gym on April 19th from 6:30-8pm.
