BSD Briefs
May 4, 2020
District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
We are transitioning back to a weekly BSD Briefs e-newsletter, sent out on Mondays in English and Spanish. If you do not receive the Monday BSD Briefs newsletter, we have links to current and past newsletters on our webpage. If you would like to receive the BSD Briefs, you can manage your message preferences on SchoolMessenger Info Center.
If your preferred language is not English or Spanish, please use the translation feature at the top of the newsletter and click “Translate Newsletter” to select a different language. Please note that if we have an urgent communication, we will not wait until the Monday newsletter to send it to families.
WE Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week!
National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4-8, 2020 and Tuesday, May 5 is National Teacher Appreciation Day. Beaverton teachers make a profound difference in the lives of more than 41,000 students in our community.
We are fortunate to have more than 2,570 teachers currently working in remotely ensuring each and every one of their students succeed.
In addition to student achievement, our teachers also excel at helping students grow as individuals, providing them with the support they need to thrive outside the classroom. Horace Mann once said, "Teachers teach because they care. Teaching young people is what they do best. It requires long hours, patience, care." Our teachers today will be remembered for years to come for the work they are doing to shape tomorrow's young leaders.
Every day, one can witness our teachers working with dedication and commitment. Please take this opportunity to recognize our devoted teachers in the Beaverton School District.
National School Nurse Day - May 6, 2020
Wednesday, May 6, 2020 is National School Nurse Day and the theme is School Nurses:
Supporting Students in Times of Crisis. This theme recognizes that school nurses play an integral role in the health of students, regardless of whether they’re in school or not. School nurses support students and student health every day of the year. But, on National School Nurse Day, we take special time to celebrate and recognize the contributions that school nurses are making to the health and learning of our District's children.
WE ❤ Our BSD Nurses, our First Responders! Thank you for helping take care of the health and safety of our students. Your devotion and attention to our students is amazing!
Pass/Incomplete in Synergy
The Oregon Department of Education recently directed all secondary schools (grades 6-12) in Oregon to report class grades using only a Pass or Incomplete scale. As a result, BSD has updated our processes so that any class grade on any transcript for the Spring of 2020 will be displayed as a Pass or Incomplete. The Pass indicates credit earned while the Incomplete communicates that additional evidence of learning is required for the credit. Neither mark has an impact on students’ Grade Point Average (GPA).
In addition, beginning Monday May 4, 2020, all grades displayed in the Synergy gradebook will be calculated using only the Pass or Incomplete Scale. Teacher’s will continue to provide feedback on assignments using written, verbal, and numerical methods. Teachers will use the standard rubric scores (1-4 or 1-8) for numeric feedback. However, all overall (calculated) grades will be displayed as Pass or Incomplete. The minimum threshold for a Pass is 1.6 on the 1-4 scale and 2.0 on the 1-8 (International Baccalaureate) scale.
