Principal's Weekly Update
RAISE Goal: to show integrity by being honest and playing fair
Te reo phrase of the week: hoki atu ki tō tūru (go back to your seat)
Kia ora,
We have had a fantastic week celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori language week). Alongside this week the students have been learning the te reo phrase of the week, we have installed Māori/English signage around the school, a new waiata is being sung in assembly each week, our year long kapa haka programme is well underway and getting ready for our performance next term, an in addition to all of this, there are plenty of in class Te Ao Maori learning opportunities available to our students. This has seen Matapu School’s commitment to Te Ao Māori (the Māori world view) really flourish this year.
This week also saw the government announce a potential move to alert level 1 on Tuesday 22nd September. We, like yourselves, have our fingers crossed that this occurs and we hope to welcome you all back on to the school site to drop off and pick up your children on this date.
Enrolment Scheme
To avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding, the board of Matapu School has adopted an enrolment scheme that has been approved by the Secretary for Education and will be implemented on 19 October 2020.
Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if they live within the home zone.
The enrolment of out-of-zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education Act 1989.
The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed at the school office, where copies of the scheme are also available.
Community Survey
On Wednesday we sent home a community survey which had a number of questions in it that relate to the future direction of our school. Our aim is to get 100% of our families to return their completed surveys so that we can gain a thorough understanding of what you value and what your aims are for your children. Please complete the survey and return it to your child's classroom teacher by Wednesday 23rd September.

Room 1
The students at Matapu School have had so many amazing learning opportunities to take advantage of this year, we are so lucky! One of these opportunities is the VLN Languages Program, this is currently being offered to our school free of charge this year, wow! VLN Language classes have been very popular with the kids and are currently well underway. The students have been learning heaps about the language of their chosen country as well as some in depth learning around that country's culture and customs.
We would also like to say a huge thank you to Swoosh Basketball Training - their enthusiasm and passion for the game is contagious. We have thoroughly enjoyed our sessions with them and we are looking forward to our final training next week.
Room 2
Room 3
This week for Te Wiki o te Reo Maori (Maori Language week), we have been listening to stories about the legends of the Gods and Maui. Miss Cleland was in on Tuesday and did some amazing art based on the story of how Maui caught the sun with his fish hook to slow it down.
We have also been practising our greetings for one person, two people or a group of people.
For writing, we are having a go at turning our persuasive writing into speeches!
Room 4
Makerspace continues to be a huge hit in class. We are just loving problem solving and making/ designing things. We have focused on how to work successfully in a team and we were very good at that this week.
