CMAS State Testing

CMAS State Testing

Vikan Families,

We are excited for the opportunity for students to show their progress on CMAS this year. While we realize it may not be the ideal situation to test right now, we are viewing it as an opportunity to check in with where our students are now. Below you will find the current testing dates and times. But please be aware that House Bill 21-1161, which will significantly decrease testing, has been proposed and we expect it to impact the schedule as we move forward. In an effort to be as transparent as possible, we want to share what we have and assure families that we do have an alternate plan should House Bill 21-1161 pass in the next few days/weeks.

Full Remote Students will test on Mondays in April:

4/5 All grades 8-1pm

4/12 All grades 8-1pm

4/19 All grades 8-1pm

4/26 8th grade only, Science 8-1:30pm

All in-person/hybrid students will test on their synchronous learning days starting April 1st and going through April 9th with 8th grade testing Science the week of April 12th.

We do realize that there is a lot going on this year and not everyone is comfortable with the decision to proceed with state testing. If you do not want your child(ren) to test this year you may opt-out without any negative impact on your child or the school. If you are interested in opting your child out of testing, please email our Assistant Principal Dr. Landry at and provide your child(ren)'s name(s) and the reason you do not want them to test.

If you opt-out of testing we would ask that hybrid students stay home on testing days to complete asynchronous work provided by teachers.

The Vikan staff has put a lot of work into creating a testing schedule that is equitable and provides a safe and healthy testing environment for students to be successful. HERE you can find answers to some frequently asked questions and information regarding safety procedures for all students and staff during testing. Please direct any additional questions you may have to Dr. Landry at

Library Update

We have the majority of our books weeded through and back up on shelves in a bookstore format--by genre. Students will easily be able to find books they are loving to read through : realistic fiction; fantasy; dystopia; etc. Non-fiction books have been weeded through and organized as well. Furniture is beginning to be organized in order to create the bookstore "hang out" vibe we are looking for. (Pics coming soon)

The help we are looking for this month is support with updating and recovering our cushions in our wood furniture seating. The table set has been given new life with some sanding and pretty paint which is requiring an update on our cushions as well.

Here are a couple of pics of our current cushions. If any of you possess a skill set on reupholstering and you have ideas and/or advice for us, please reach out to We would greatly appreciate it!

March Anti-Bullying Information

At Vikan, safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We are excited because students and staff are working to define the terms Rude, Mean, and Bullying to help name behaviors that we often see. In February we worked with students on one main topic: reporting. We want students to understand that there is a big difference between snitching and reporting inappropriate behavior. Reporting has to do with keeping EVERYONE in our building safe and sharing information with a trusted adult or utilizing Safe to Tell is the RIGHT thing to do to keep everyone safe. Whether the behaviors are witnessed or felt, students MUST report unsafe behavior. We shared with them VIKAN's school wide goal of nurturing healthy, safe, supportive learning environments and how reporting unsafe behavior helps us work towards our goal. The first slide below is about what to do if you are being or a witness of bullying behavior and the second slide is how to report. Keep up the conversations with your student. As always, thank you for supporting your student(s) at Vikan Middle School. In March we plan to look at more scenarios to help students practice making decisions to support our positive culture at Vikan.
