SAVE the DATE- Thursday, February 24th at 6-8:00pm- Sara Wicht Presents "How to Lead conversations about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and the Social Justice Standards with TK-5th Grade Students"
Let's Talk! How to Facilitate Critical Conversations with Young People
Educators in all settings play a crucial role in helping students talk openly about the historical roots and contemporary manifestations of social inequality and discrimination, and research show us that not talking about race and racism reinforces racist systems and behaviors. Children as young as two years old use race to reason about people’s behaviors. Learning how to communicate about such topics as white privilege, police violence, economic inequality and mass incarceration requires practice, and facilitating difficult conversations with children of all ages demands courage and skill. This workshop offers methods for continual self-reflection and use-tomorrow strategies to plan discussions and to facilitate critical conversations with young people.

The Ocean Cleanup Interceptor Pilot Project: Coming to Ballona Creek in 2022!
The Ocean Cleanup Interceptor Pilot Project: Coming to Ballona Creek in 2022!
Come learn about this exciting project at our next ESC Meeting: Thursday February 17th from 5-6:30pm via zoom. The Ocean Cleanup team will present at the beginning for 30 minutes.
Trash is a constant concern in LA County waterways: over 60.000 pounds of trash tragically reach the Santa Monica Bay beaches and Pacific Ocean each year. Los Angeles County Public Works is tackling the pollution issue by developing a 2-year pilot project with the Dutch company The Ocean Cleanup to deploy an Interceptor barge at the mouth of Ballona Creek. The Ocean Cleanup Interceptor will capture floating plastics and other trash on Ballona Creek, especially during heavy rains, in the most innovative way!
The Interceptor is a vessel-like module that will be moored to the existing jetties along Ballona Creek in Playa del Rey through the attachment of six moorings, with trash booms that will funnel the debris drifting down Ballona Creek into the Interceptor. Floating pieces will rise on the Interceptor’s solar-powered conveyor belt into trash bins, which will be disposed of off-site, preventing the refuse from reaching the Pacific Ocean!
