Classroom Connection📓
Science 🧪
High School
Physics students have been completing an experiment testing the conductivity of heat through different kinds of metals and learning about why metals conduct heat much better than non-metallic substances.
Chemistry students have been modeling different molecules and learning about how the structure of a molecule affects its various properties.
Biology students are beginning to learn about natural selection and evolution through case studies. This will soon lead to learning about similarities and differences in the anatomy of different species, which we will be exploring through pig and frog dissection experiments.
Middle School
Middle School Science is moving quickly from outer space to weather and on the way we are analyzing all things waves and how waves transfer energy into matter. This is extra exciting at KSB because sound waves have special meaning to us. Each grade level will have exposure to different levels of vocabulary relative to waves. The reason we are focusing on waves right now is to develop a foundation of energy transferring into and out of water which drives local weather patterns. Weather is focused on during middle school because it requires abstract thinking to envision how the water cycle works without being able to see how the molecules behave. It is generally understood that prior to middle school students learn best in terms of concrete ideas. And once they hit middle school (actually puberty) their brain starts to be able to understand abstract ideas. The reasons the water cycle works are very abstract- the reasons are beyond sighted people’s vision too. The changes to phases happen at a molecular level. Depth of understanding is scaffolded to grade level. For example, novice learners will learn limited and simple vocabulary relative to waves and more advanced learners will e exposed to more in-depth learning.
Middle school will be taking a field trip to the Big Four Bridge and eating lunch at Kingfish on Thursday April 20. Please watch for permission slips.
Elementary
Fifth grade science is working on the four spheres of the Earth, the Geosphere, the Biosphere, the Hydrosphere, and the Atmosphere. They are making books with tactual models of each sphere. The Atmosphere has multiple layers and they know which layer absorbs harmful rays, has the majority of our weather, and has satellites. Students are enjoying this unit on Earth's Systems.
Our latest engineering unit is designing a trap for a Leprechaun. Second grade students are reading How to Catch a Leprechaun in science. Ask them if their leprechaun was caught or if he/she got away.
Kindergarten and First Grade students in Science are finishing up their unit on weather and will make rain sticks on Thursday and Friday.
Library 📚
Elementary students searched for a pot of gold (cookies) through a scavenger hunt on the KSB campus in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Upper high school students have heard book talks on several books that focus on a global issue. They will be completing an assignment in Mr. Springer’s social studies classes after completing their books.
