Large Group Festival
This week, all seventh and eighth grade G-E-T music students, along with Middle and High School bands and choirs from seven area school districts, traveled to Whitehall and took part in the Wisconsin School Music Association’s Large Group Festival. Bands and choirs performed in front of three judges, had a clinic, received feedback and were given a rating based on their performance. Students also had the opportunity to listen and evaluate the performance from another school from our area.
G-E-T Middle School has taken part in this festival for many years, dating back at least to the early 1960’s. This is the longest running core program for the WSMA, dating further back than their incorporation in 1932!
Both the band and the choir performed beautifully, and were given top ratings from each of the judges.
Math Competition
G-E-T Middle School finished 4th in class C of the Wisconsin Mathematics Counsel Competition. The team consisting of Annalise Kent, Caydie Thompson, Hunter James, Eva Schubert, Camille Engel, Reed Waletzko, William Roessler, and Noahn Miralles narrowly missed 2nd place by 3 points but this year’s team scored G-E-Ts highest team score of all time. Congratulations to Annalise Kent and Camille Engel for receiving 1st team and Caydie Thompson, Hunter James, and Reed Waletzko for receiving 2nd team WMC honors.

Student Teaching and Lacrosse
Greetings, everyone!
My name is Nolan Paar, and I am thrilled to be joining your middle and high school community as a student teacher this semester. I am currently pursuing my degree in Physical Education and Health at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and will graduate in May of this year. I will be shadowing Ms. Kish and Mr. Anderson for the remainder of the year and learning the in’s and outs of PE and Health. I have already learned a lot but am looking forward to gaining new insight from the administration and staff throughout the building.
We are beginning a Lacrosse unit for the very first time at the middle school and the students seem to be enjoying a new challenge. I feel lucky to be able to try a new sport out, as this is my first time being exposed to the teaching of a lacrosse unit. The sport is brand new to many of the kids as well and to see them confidently pick up the stick and work to improve their skills has been very exciting. We are working on some of the basics like catching and throwing with the equipment and hope to lead the unit towards some fun small sided games. I am very grateful for the opportunity to learn from the great staff at GET middle and high school, and am looking forward to a great end of the year with the students.
Honors Band
Good luck to Will Roessler as he auditions on April 12, for a spot in the Wisconsin School Music Association Middle Level Honors Program. Last year, 547 students from all over Wisconsin auditioned for 128 places in the band or orchestra.
Art Club
The 2024 Middle School Art Club was a success despite many members juggling commitments between the play and art club. Together, they crafted a unique group collage blending nature motifs with some outer space humor. Heartfelt thanks to all participants for their collaboration and imagination.
2024-25 High School Music Trip
Hello Everyone,
Every two years the G-E-T bands and choirs are given the opportunity to travel to a big city in
the United States where we provide as many musical and cultural opportunities as possible.
This trip is open to all 2024-2025 music students 9th-12th grade. Next year we will be traveling
to “The Big Apple” New York City. The trip will take place over our spring break, March
24th-29th. Students will not miss any days of school!!! The trip will include stops at the Statue
of Liberty, Ellis Island, 911 museum memorial, China Town, step on guided tour, tour of Radio
City Music Hall, 2 Broadway Shows, Top of the Rock Observatory, a trip to Central Park,
Rockefeller Center, 5 nights in a hotel, transportation by coach buses, all tips will be included in
the price, and a group meal at Dallas BBQ before our final Broadway show. We learned from
last year’s trip that the students would have liked a bit more free time to shop, eat, and explore
so we’ve also included plenty of those opportunities in this trip too. This trip is always fun and
exciting.
The trip, with all of the above included, will cost each student $1900. A good way to bring down
that price would be to help out at the winter concession stand, run by the Music Boosters and
earn points toward the trip. Those points turn into a dollar amount when we get closer to the
trip, that can be deducted from the total price of the trip. In order to lock in hotel prices and
Broadway shows we will need a final number of people going by May 10th of this school year.
To secure your spot we will need a $200 non refundable down payment.
We will also be looking for parent chaperones for the trip. Usually about 10. Those parents with
the most volunteer booster points will be given the chance to chaperone first, but please reach
out no matter what, as it will be on a first come first serve basis for chaperones. The chaperone
price for the trip will be $2125 for a double room or $1900 if you’d like to stay in a quad. In the
past the Music Boosters have paid for half of the chaperones’ trip bringing the total cost to
$1,062.50.
Again, please let us know if your child is interested by sending me your $200 non refundable
deposit to secure their spot before May 10th. We are looking forward to providing this amazing
experience to our music students.
Thanks,

Holocaust Workshop.
2024 Teaching The Holocaust Workshop- From 7th grade teacher Hannah Torud
I spent the last two days at Viterbo University listening to many different presenters speak on their knowledge of The Holocaust as well as different methods to incorporate this knowledge into the classroom. One of the presenters, Stephen Feinberg, gave three separate presentations on the history of Germany and The Holocaust. One of the greatest pieces of knowledge I took from this presentation was that antisemitism was present in Germany long, long before the Nazi’s existed. Another great presentation was given by Dana Humphrey, titled “Nazi Education and Hitler’s Youth”. I was enlightened by this presentation because I had no idea of the indoctrination that the German youth were put through during WWII. Before the conference, attendees were asked to read the book “The Assignment” by Liza Wiemer, as she would be presenting on how to incorporate this Young Adult novel into the classroom setting. It was awesome to hear her present and tell the story behind the novel as that will be a great narrative to share with students to foster their own engagement in the novel. Another novel that was presented in terms of teaching it within the classroom was “Squirrel is Alive”; this presentation was given by Dave Nelson, a teacher in Westby, who has been teaching the book for the last 12 years. This presentation was particularly great because the story is about a woman named Mary Rostad, and her two children were there to share about their mother’s life and it was fascinating because we do not receive many chances to hear from sources such as them with such specific detail and fact surrounding The Holocaust and real events that are so closely related to them. There were also a couple of presentations on how to incorporate graphic novels and reader’s theaters into classroom settings that fully engage students because they have to put themselves in the shoes of those that endured the events of The Holocaust.
I left the conference with one quote that really stood out to me that I will be taking and incorporating into my classroom many times a year: “The survivors of The Holocaust have great stories that we need to hear and cannot forget. However, those with the best stories are those who did not survive The Holocaust and we absolutely cannot forget about those individuals either.”
Viterbo Holocaust Presentation
6th and 7th grade students had the change to attend the Viterbo Holocaust Presentation. The guest speaker was Ida Paluch Kersz. Ida Paluch Kersz was born months before WWII broke out and the Nazi soldiers invaded Poland. In 1942 with deportation imminent, Ida was welcomed into a new Polish Christian family. Unfortunately, Ida’s twin brother, Adam, was separated and ended up in Majdanek death camp, and the two didn’t know each other’s fate for 53 years. Their unique story of reunion is told in the memoir, Unveiled Memories which is also a documentary.

Tech-Ed 2
One of the classes students are able to choose from is Tech-Ed II. Tech Ed II starts with 3D modeling using the program Onshape. Students complete blueprints then extrude them to give a three dimensional perspective. This allows them to rotate the part and see all sides. Then they will complete a cube project in which they have to design a puzzle cube on Onshape, and then it will be printed with the 3D printers. Upon completions of this project students transfer into a boat build in the shop in which they use a 9V electric motor, styrofoam and propellor to build a boat that will be tested at Arctic Springs. Finally, students complete a sign project using a router, sanders, and bandsaw.
Students hard at work.

2023 Red Ribbon Week
Monday, Oct. 23: Rally in Red - Wear red today to kick-off the Red Ribbon Week celebration!
Tuesday, Oct. 24: Alternative Tuesday – The definition of alternative is “available as another possibility”. Just like there are tons of alternative choices to using drugs, there are also lots of options for our daily wardrobe. Today, have some fun and wear as many different kinds of clothes in one day (examples: 2 kinds of shoes, mismatched socks, extra warm pants and short-sleeved shirt, clashing colors, etc…).
Wednesday, oct. 25: Natural High Day – A natural high is a hobby, sport, art form or activity that makes you feel good and does not involve drugs/alcohol. Wear clothes that show others what your natural high is!
Thursday, Oct. 26: Scare the Hair Out of Drugs Day – Do something funny or frightening with your hair today. Make sure your parents approve first, please!
Friday, Oct. 27: Say “Boo” to Drugs Day Bring your costume to school that day.

Survey!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The G-E-T School District is always looking for ways to improve students’ educational experience and better serve families. To help us accomplish this goal, we are conducting a survey to understand what we are doing well, where we need to improve, and help establish planning priorities.
This survey is administered by School Perceptions, an independent education research firm, to ensure your feedback is confidential. Please be on the lookout for an email from School Perceptions.
The survey will be open from October 16 through October 30.
If you do not receive an email invitation, please check your spam/junk/promotions folder.
We value your feedback. Please take the time to participate. Together, we will continue to shape the future of our schools.

Dental Clinic
Seal-A-Smile Dental Outreach
Dental outreach forms were sent home in students’ red folders this past week. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to fill out and return those forms to your child’s teacher. If you prefer the online consent form, you can find that here: https://sealasmile.wisconsin.gov/Consent
A couple of notes from our School Nurse regarding the outreach program:
• The Seal-a-Smile program is meant for all students, regardless of insurance or previous dental care. There are no income guidelines or limitations.
• These visits are not meant to replace regular dental visits. It is an opportunity for students who may not have access to regular dental care to receive services and for those students who have regular care to receive supplemental services between office visits.
• Dental professionals will not perform any unauthorized procedures or services. Any need for additional services or procedures will be communicated to parent/guardian with referral to a regular dentist. If you would like to have your student receive the cleaning and assessment, but do not wish to have sealants or fluoride applied, please make a note on your consent form.
• Students can receive services during any and all of the visits, so long as the consent form is on file. Seal-a-Smile would ideally visit schools 3x/year. A student who misses the first visit can still sign up for subsequent visits.
If you have any questions, please contact Kara Yanacheck, School Nurse.

Dental Services
NorthLakes Community Clinic is offering a preventative school based dental program for all children grades Pre-K through 12th in the G-E-T school district. This program is funded in part by Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile in collaboration of the Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin and the Division of Public Oral Health Program. A dental professional will come to the school to provide dental services at NO CHARGE to families. The treatment a child receives in this program is not meant to be an alternative to regular dental care. It is still strongly recommended that routine care continues with your family dentist. If a child does not have a family dentist for routine dental care including any follow up care which may be recommended after each school visit, we are committed to helping families find one.
This program includes:
• Oral health education and dental supplies
• Oral health assessment by a licensed dental professional
• Fluoride varnish applications (2-3 per year)
• Dental sealants and sealant replacement where needed
If you would like to have your child participate you can sign them via the online consent link below or complete the paper consent form that will be sent home with your child. If you choose to have your child participate in this program, after each visit you will receive a report describing your child’s dental health status and what was completed. This report will be shared with your dentist and the school nurse. All procedures will follow recommendations from the American Dental Association and Center for Disease Control and Prevention for school-based dental programs. We are committed to following these recommendations as they change with the pandemic.
Sign up online! https://sealasmile.wisconsin.gov/Consent
Once you have completed the Online Consent, it will automatically send it to our Dental Outreach Program Coordinator.

SOS
Dear Parent / Caregiver
This year school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.In October, these lessons will be taught to the 6th and 7th grade classes, and in November, the 8th grade classes will receive a booster lesson.
We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in this program please contact us at 608-582-3500.
