Estonia joined the European Union on March 29, 2004. Estonia therefore is not a founding country.

History of Estonia

The Rebublic of Estonia was founded on February 24, 1918. It remained this way until the soviet occupation that occurred in 1940. Then Estonia's Independence Day was only celebrated in small communities around the world. Estonia replaced the red Soviet flag with their black, blue, and white flag.

Location

Estonia is located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The country of Latvia is to it's south. Across the Mediterranean Sea, to Estonia's North is Finland, and to it's Northeast is Sweden.

Estonia's flag was made on June 4, 1884 in Otepää. It was used for an Estonian university's student association. Then it became the national symbol after they banned the red Soviet flag.

The capital of Estonia is Tallin. Other major cities in Estonia consist of Saaremaa, Tartu, Valga, and Paldiski.

Estonia is one of the leading innovators in the world. Estonia consists of medieval heritage, a diverse background, and Nordic temperament. These things help drawn in tourists to the explore the unique country.

Geography

Estonia is a very low and flat country. It is 45,226 square kilometers which is about the size of Vermont and New Hampshire. Estonia has a long shallow coastline. The highest point in Estonia is Suurmunamägi.

Government

Estonia is a parliamentary republic. The prime minister is Mr. Taavi Rõivas. There are three branches of their government. The first is the Reform Party, which has six ministers. The second is the Social Democratic Party, which has four ministers, and finally the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union, which has four ministers as well.

Currency system

In the beginning of 2011, Estonia changed their currency to the Euro. Before that they had Kroons and cents. One kroon equaled 100 cents. It is good for Americans to go to Estonia because 85 cents equals 10 Kroons.

Interesting facts

Tallin is the capital of Estonia, but there are designated capitals throughout the year. Each designated capital has a special time to be considered capital. Estonia is the country to use online voting. Almost 50% of of Estonia is forest area.
