Owatonna ALC
April 2023
Message from our Principal
I can't believe I am about to finish my first year as the Principal of the ALC and Owatonna Online! It has gone fast, and I am already planning for next year. I have been so impressed with the students and parents at both the ALC and Owatonna Online. I truly have great students that work hard. As we head into our last quarter, I want to ensure my students finish strong and reach their goals. Please make sure you are checking your emails daily for updates regarding field trips, graduation, credits earned, and community service activities coming up. This last quarter will be busy, and we want to keep everyone informed. If you still need to do so, please ensure you are signing up for time slots to select your electives. This is important for our scheduling next year. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact the school.

22-23 PROM
PROM GUIDELINES
The Owatonna High School Prom is Saturday, April 29th...Please read below so you are able to attend!
Eligibility:
Per the OHS Student Handbook, all students who are planning to participate in prom MUST be a student in good standing. A student in good standing means:
- All fees are paid. Check your Campus Portal under "Fees" to see if you have any fees. If you have a fee to pay, please see Megan in the main office (we need an exact change OR a check made out to OHS - we cannot make a change and we do not have the capability to take a debit/credit card).
- No more than 7 unexcused absences by the date of the snow week dance, and/or prom. Check your Student Campus Portal attendance.
- Not be serving any in or out-of-school suspension or exclusion during the scheduled event.
- Not have a record of repeated behavioral violations. Such a record may result in a loss of participation as determined by school administration.
- Have completed all assigned detention time.
If you are not sure where you stand with any of the above things and are interested in participating in snow prom, please email Melina Caballero at mcaballero2@isd761.org to check and see if you are eligible to attend. Those that think attendance may be an issue need to reach out asap (prom - by March 3) to discuss this and what options you may have in order to be eligible to attend.
Guest/Date:
If you are approved to attend prom and would like to bring a guest from outside of OHS, ALC, or Owatonna Online you will need to complete the guest form along with a photo ID of your guest and turn it to Mrs. DeWitz in the OHS main office by 3:00 PM on Wednesday, April 26th. No guest forms will be accepted after this date. Here is the guest form. Guests must be at least a junior in high school and cannot be older than 20.
Student ID:
Also, just a reminder that all students who are attending an OHS dance (prom) must have a school issued student ID with them to check in the night of the dance. If you need a student ID, please email Mrs. Rosenau at mrosenau@isd761.org to request one. Once she has it printed, she will email you back to let you know it is ready to be picked up in the office. Do NOT wait until the last minute to request this.

Crisis Response
I wanted to include in the newsletter the Crisis Response for Southeast Minnesota. It is important to remember that help is just a phone call away!
The crisis response inspires hope in adults, children, youth, and their families by delivering compassionate, person-centered, recovery-based mental health support during a crisis. Please do not hesitate to use this as a resource.

February 1 will start Black History Month. Students will have the opportunity to create projects to share and display at the ALC campus to recognize and honor the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history. More information will be available soon.

PARENT PORTAL - Great Resource to check your student's attendance!
Review your profile settings regarding automated notifications, current email, and phone numbers.
NO CELLPHONE POLICY
Students and Families - We want to ensure students are engaged in learning and ready for instruction. We need the students to be free of distractions and ready to learn! Cell phones are a serious distraction, and we want to remind families that cell phones are NOT allowed to be used in the classroom during instructional time. Please review this with your student.
The full policy reads: It is a privilege, not a right, to have a cell phone or personal device in a classroom. Therefore, cell phones must be put away when the bell rings and should not be seen by a teacher.

COMMON INQUIRIES
My child has an unplanned absence. What do you need me to do? Call the attendance line at 444-8000. Leave your child’s name, grade and a reason for absence. To ensure the health and safety of all students and staff, please list specific symptoms of illness for Public Health Tracking. Please leave parent's name and a phone number where we can reach you at in case we have further questions.
My child is going to be absent in the future. How should I handle this? Please contact the ALC office at 507-444-8000 or send a note signed by a parent/guardian. Include parental contact information in case we have questions or would like to follow up.
My child was marked absent, but I know they are in school. Why did that happen? Students are to follow their schedule everyday and be on time for class. If they choose not to follow their schedule, they will be marked absent. Teachers communicate with one another throughout the day and will clear up any incorrect absences that get entered.
If your child arrives late for school, it is important that they sign-in in the office and receive a pass. Their arrival time will be recorded in Infinite Campus.
If your child leaves the building without permission during the school day, they will not be allowed to return for the remainder of the day.
Can my child get homework if they are absent? Homework can be requested if the student has been gone more than two days. You may email the teachers to gather the homework. Typically we require one full school day to gather the homework for students. If possible, the teachers may email you the homework; otherwise, it may be picked up in the office at the end of the school day.
How is my child doing in school? Parent Portal is a very useful tool to follow your child’s progress in school with grades and attendance. You may also email your child's teacher for progress updates. Teacher contact information is listed below.
How do I pay on my child’s lunch account? There is a payment box outside the office where your son/daughter can drop off payments. Please put it in an envelope and write your child’s full name and grade. You may also pay online HERE.
