We, the Roosevelt PTO Trunk or Treat Committee, have decided to combine our Trunk or Treat event with the Sheiko and Doherty PTO! While we are sad it won't be at Roosevelt, we ARE excited about growing this into a larger community event. Sheiko already had 30 trunks registered and now 10 Roosevelt trunks have moved over too. Friday is going to be a huge, FREE event filled with candy and fun for our students.

Thank you to everyone for feeding the candy monster these last 2 weeks! He has been stuffed to the brim twice! If you want your candy back we will return it to you (email rooseveltelempto@gmail.com or FB message Anne Linsangan). Otherwise, we are going to use the candy to give to our Roosevelt trunks that signed up at Sheiko.

We know this change came close to the last minute and the Trunk or Treat committee and I appreciate your understanding and flexibility with joining the Sheiko event. We hope to see a huge Roosevelt turn out at Sheiko on Friday!

This month we are focusing on the Capturing Kids Hearts character trait of Empathy. Staff will be working with students to help build and understanding of and put into practice this character trait throughout the school day. Below I have included some information no how you can continue to build this connection at home.

What is Empathy?

Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.

Why Focus on Empathy?

• Empathy builds positive classroom culture. Empathy empowers students to learn to understand each other to build trust and safety in the classroom.
• Empathy strengthens community. Empathy helps students strengthen their relationships with classmates, other students and adults at school, and at home.
• Empathy prepares your students to be leaders in their community. The best leaders understand the people they lead and are able to show they care.

Empathy In Action:

• Take a different perspective. When you take a different perspective, you put aside your own feelings and reactions to see the situation through another’s eyes.
• Put aside judgment. Take a pause and rather than express conclusions about a situation based on what you see, step back and consider other things you may still need to know or understand.
• Communicate that you understand. Instead of giving advice, respond with reflective phrases like, “It sounds like you...” or “I hear that you...” to express that you understand and care.

• The parade will start at 1:30pm with classroom parties after from 2:00-2:45pm.
• If you have parents that are going to attend the parties it if very important they are off property by 2:45pm so it does not impact the dismissal process.
• All costumes MUST go over clothes-no changing in the bathrooms allowed.
• No blood/gore or weapons for costumes
• Only HEAD/LEAD room volunteers/party planners will be allowed to come into Roosevelt before the Parade
• Families are allowed to come to the parties this year AFTER the parade.
• All snacks/treats must be nut-free
• All snacks must be INDIVIDUALLY bagged/wrapped
• No latex balloons
• All families MUST be out of the building by 2:45 to be sure the carline and bus loop have room to do their jobs

Well, do we have an opportunity for you! Our school district’s United We Walk Committee has an event each year celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The students have the opportunity to create a design that will be the inspiration for our 2023 United We Walk Button. I would like to personally invite you to encourage your students to participate in the United We Walk Button Contest. Students can draw a piece of art about what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and legacy means to them focusing on Dr. King's message: "I Have A Dream. . .1963-2023. We know that our students are awesome!! Let's give them a chance to share their amazing skills. The attached information will provide more details. Please submit any contest entries to me at Jennifer.Graham@wbsd.org no later than Friday, December 9. Thank you for your help, time, and support.

If you are unable to pick your student up by 3:30pm they will be taken to the Kids Klub program. Please understand there is a fee associated with this supervision. You can contact community education with any questions regarding before and after school care.

Bell Schedule 2021-2022

8:20am-3:12pm

Arrival

• The doors will open at 8:10am for the 2022-2023 school year. Due to a lack of adult supervision students will not be allowed in the building until 8:10am.

• If students are dropped off prior to 8:10am they will be required to wait outside the building. (Note adult supervision will not be provided prior to 8:10am)

• Students will enter the building, go to their locker, and then immediately to class. Staff will be present to greet students at the classroom door starting at 8:10am.

• Our goal is to reduce the amount of time students are in the hallways congregating with other students.

Dismissal

• This year no students will be allowed to walk home from Roosevelt. All students will need to ride the bus or be car pickup.

• Students who are riding the bus will be dismissed at 3:10pm.

• Car Line pickup will start at 3:10pm and will dismiss from the Commerce Rd. entrance/exit.
  

Note: All traffic will be required to turn right onto Commerce Rd. No left turn will be allowed to keep the flow of traffic moving.

We're excited to welcome back parent volunteers in the 22-23 school year!

Unscheduled visitors coming to the building will not be permitted to enter past the front office.

Drop-in visitors will not be allowed to enter the building without a pre-scheduled appointment. We will continue this approach in an effort to maximize safety & security while minimizing disruptions to learning.

Families are welcome to schedule in-person meetings with administrators, teachers, counselors, and other staff. These meetings should be scheduled in advance and communicated with the main office. The option to Zoom for meetings will also continue to be available.

Volunteers:

• Must have approval from the principal and teacher before volunteering.
• Interested volunteers must also complete a volunteer form.
• ICHAT background checks are still required for all non-student volunteers.

Roosevelt Elementary qualifies as a Title I building. With Title I funding we are able to provide multiple resources to students that support academic success. Some of these resources include but are not limited to,

• Intervention support in the areas of reading, writing and math.

• Before and after school program

• Summer academic programs

• Academic resources

This year food services will be providing the opportunity for all students to receive free breakfast but not free lunch. With that being said, I encourage you to still complete the application if you feel you may qualify for services. The amount of Title I funding Roosevelt will receive is based on these percentages.

The goal is to make sure that no child goes hungry on the weekend. Run by volunteers, there is NO cost to families.This program sends six non-perishable meals home each Friday of the school year.

Bivalent COVID-19 vaccine boosters available for younger age groups

• Children 6 years and older may get the bivalent Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at least two months following their completion of primary or booster doses.
• Children 5 years and older may receive the bivalent Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at least two months following their completion of primary or booster doses.

Pontiac, Mich., Oct. 21, 2022 – The updated bivalent COVID-19 vaccine for children 5 years and older will be available at Oakland County Health Division clinics in Pontiac and Southfield beginning Monday, Oct. 24. Bivalent means the vaccine contains two strains of the virus. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. "As we enter the colder months, and children are back to school in person, we will see more respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19," Oakland County Health Officer Calandra Green said. "The COVID-19 primary and booster vaccines are one of the best tools we have to protect against serious illness and hospitalization from the disease.”

The Omicron bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccine targets the most recent and more contagious Omicron variants (BA.4 and BA.5). While COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, more children have gotten sick and hospitalized as waves of COVID-19 have occurred. Parents are encouraged to consider primary vaccination for their children and follow-up with an updated booster dose when eligible. The updated bivalent COVID-19 vaccines are currently available at vaccine
providers throughout the county. Contact your doctor or local pharmacy prior to visiting to determine vaccine availability.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone ages 5 years and older get an updated bivalent COVID-19 booster if it has been at least 2 months since your last booster or final primary. Doses for all ages are available at the North Oakland Health Center, 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., Building 34E, in Pontiac and the South Oakland Health Center, 27725 Greenfield Rd., in Southfield 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Mondays and 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

Last year's inaugural season was a huge success with over 50 wrestlers participating in the club, and 4 wrestlers qualifying and competing in the MYWAY State Championship. This program will continue to focus on developing the fundamentals of folk-style wrestling, while also focusing on the discipline needed to be successful in the sport. In addition, building a love for the sport through various games and fun competitions is a primary goal. Leading the program are West Bloomfield's own middle school wrestling coaches, Coach Tom DeGrand and Coach Carlos Acosta. Additionally, the experience, expertise, and passion from Coach Mike Zimnicki, Coach James Hitchcock, and Coach Tim Burzynski result in a team that is able to provide unparalleled support for youth wrestlers. The program also welcomes and encourages parent support during practices. Wrestlers will have the opportunity to participate in multiple MYWAY competitions throughout the season. These are considered optional, but certainly encouraged if your child has one or more years of experience. We look forward to seeing your child on the mat!
