January 2020
The Principal's Corner
Welcome back from winter break! I hope your time away from the routine of school was filled with rest and family fun, and that your holidays were filled with joy. The faculty and staff are ready and excited for our students to return on Monday morning.
Just as a reminder, our campus playground, as well as breakfast service opens at 7:45 AM each day. Please don’t allow your students to arrive at campus prior to that time, as there is no adult supervision.
As always if there are ever any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's classroom teacher or the front office. We are here to educate, support and assist in growing your child(ren). Thank you for all you do to continue to support Canyon Rim!
Happy 2020,
Joe Lopat
Principal
Conflict vs. Bullying
To start the new year, we have dedicated a brand new Buddy Bench in memory of Kevaleen DeBolt. Its purpose will serve as a way for students to meet new friends and take care of fellow Cougars. At Canyon Rim, we are a family that strives to positively support each other and work through conflicts in a healthy way.
Definition of Bullying
Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behavior that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.
What bullying is not
- single episodes of social rejection or dislike
- single episode acts of nastiness or spite
- random acts of aggression or intimidation
- mutual arguments, disagreements or fights.

Nurse's Corner: CRE is Latex-free!
CRE is a Latex-free school, as we have students on campus who are extremely allergic to Latex. Because Latex powder can be transferred through Latex and even Mylar balloons, we ask that parents keep the birthday celebration balloons at home. Thank you!
Nurse's Corner: For Parents of 5th Graders
To: Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of current 5th grade students,
Next year for 6th grade, your child will be required to have two immunizations. State law requires that ALL Sixth graders must have these two vaccines:
Tdap vaccine (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis)
Students entering sixth grade must obtain a dose of Tdap. Your child would not have received this vaccine any time in their lives previously. Kindergarten students are required to have DTaPs. This is not the same as a Tdap.
Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4)
Students entering sixth grade must obtain a dose of Meningococcal vaccine. It protects against bacterial meningitis. Your child would not have received this vaccine any time previously in their life.
These two shots are given once a child turns 11 years old. If your 5th grader has already turned 11yrs old, I highly encourage you to get the shots done now so you don’t have to think about it when school starts next August. I also suggest that if your child is not yet 11 yrs old, but has a birthday coming soon, to schedule an appt. after their birthday so that they can get their immunizations done now. For those students who will not be 11 years old until after school starts next August, this does not apply to them at this time. They must be 11 years old to receive the immunizations.
Once your child has had their immunizations, please send in an updated shot record so that I can update their record here at school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you,
Staci Sutton MSN RN CPN NCSN

Social Worker's Corner
Hello, Cougar Families!
I want to thank our Canyon Rim community for all of your help and assistance with the Angel Tree and the Food Drive. We appreciate all of your generosity! In addition to our Canyon Rim Community, we also want to thank Kenny Klaus, Trilogy and Campo Verde High School for their gift donations. We were able to provide holiday gifts and food to twenty of our own families. Thank you!
We are beginning to introduce emotional management in grades K-4 during our Second Steps lessons. For 5th and 6th, we are focusing on accepting others’ perspectives and differences. In all of our lessons, we continue to emphasize the importance of being respectful and utilizing empathy for others.
I hope you enjoyed your winter break. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are in need of resources for basic needs! If you would like to contact me directly, call (480) 984-3216 x306 or email me at Kerry.draney@gilbertschools.net.
Positively,
Kerry Draney
