Eagle Academy Weekly Update
Week of November 1, 2020
And the Winner is….You!
Further below in this newsletter you will see the names of two Eagle students who put in tremendous effort this past month. They are our Students of the Month for the month of October. Success in school is not an inherited trait. Neither does it come by sheer luck. The equation to achieve academic success can be summed up as follows:
1. Stand Up…for yourself. Believe that you are worth it, and can do it!
2. Show Up…no more excuses. Get out of bed, log on, participate. Or catch that bus.
3. Step Up…your game. Identify the areas that need improvement. Start today.
And whatever you do, Don’t Give Up! You can do this.

11th - Dear Martin - this books takes a look at equality, race, and other important topics that relate to the real world. Our main character explores his new knowledge by writing letters to MLK Jr.
12th - Speechless - While reading this book, we ill be discussing words, word choices, and vows of silence. We will also be exploring teenage topics (that can become adult topics) like gossiping (who is hurts and how) and the importance of words because words matter.
Climate and Culture
Guess Who's Back?!
Mr. Meister has returned to Eagle Academy to fill in for...himself! He was called out of retirement as a long-term substitute while the district continues in its quest to locate someone to permanently fill his canvas shoes.

What is Self-Care and Why is Self-Care So Important? By Mrs. Russo
Many of us have so many responsibilities in life that we forget to take care of our personal needs. And, while it’s hard to prioritize yourself when you have so many other items on your to-do list, self-care is an important aspect of stress management.
We are all less able to handle the stresses that come our way when we're depleted by physical and emotional exhaustion. Or, put in a more positive way, we are more resilient and more able to handle life's stress when we are feeling our best both physically and emotionally. Self-care, a way to revitalize ourselves provides many benefits, and here are just a few:
- May Boost Physical Health
- While self-pampering doesn’t always lead to major improvements in overall health the way healthy diet and exercise do, the relaxation you get from it can trigger the relaxation response. This, in turn, can prevent chronic stress from damaging your health. So in a sense, self-care is good for you inside and out.

- Can Improve Emotional Health
- Taking time out to care for yourself can remind you and others that you and your needs are important, too. Having a well-cared-for body can make you feel good about yourself and your life, and conveys to others that you value yourself. This can contribute to long-term feelings of well-being.

- Provides a Break from Stress
- There are several different ways to focus on self-care. Many involve making time to get enough sleep, prioritizing healthy meals, ensuring a balance of leisure time in your schedule, and making time for friends.

- Offers Time Alone
- While different people have varying degrees of introversion and extroversion, having some time alone is important for most people’s functioning. When you’re relaxing by yourself, it’s much easier to slip into a state of quiet meditation, enjoy some self-reflection, or let your problems work themselves out in the back of your mind without taking all of your focused concentration.

For the month of November, Eagle Academy staff and students will have the opportunity to practice self-care with the "Autumn Self-Care Challenge", which will be posted on the bulletin board as a gentle reminder and resource for everyone in need of some "me" time.
