Shared Reading Book of the Month
This month’s Character Book of the Month for the month of Fairness, being read by all students, is Emmanuel’s Dream: The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu by Laurie Ann Thompson. The award-winning book tells the inspiring true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah who bicycled across Ghana with only one leg. Emmanuel embodied courage, strength and determination throughout his life, and he became a national hero and role model. Emmanuel’s activism prompted the Ghanaian Parliament to pass the Persons with Disability Act that entitles people with disabilities to the same rights as other citizens in Ghana. Students can learn about Emmanuel’s nonprofit on his website EmmanuelsDream.org. The book was also turned into a film, Emmanuel's Gift, narrated by Oprah Winfrey.
Attached is a lesson plan for the read aloud.

Thank you, McKinley families, for participating in the Ed Foundation’s family fundraising campaign! Thank you to the volunteers for spearheading this effort, and to the 94 families for making a donation. Your support helps to ensure that enrichment programs such as P.S. ARTS will continue.
The grade with the highest participation was…. 1st grade with 40% participation! The other grades were close behind! As a reward, all 1st graders received a coupon for a free hot chocolate from Starbucks at 26th and Santa Monica Blvd this weekend.
Thanks again, McKinley, for your donations to the Santa Monica Education Foundation! You help our students SOAR!
