Memory Enhancement and Forgetting
Factors of Forgetting
Not paying attention to important details, the passage of time, head injuries, retroactive interference, proactive interference, and cultural influences all affect our ability to remember things (Morris & Maisto, 2013).
Memory Enhancing Strategies
There are some ways that we can improve our memory including chunking, rote rehearsal, and elaborative rehearsal. I typically use rote rehearsal and it seems to work most of the time for short-term and long-term memory. Sometimes when I feel that rote rehearsal is not enough, I will try elaborative rehearsal to help the information stick. I believe that these strategies work because of the amount of repetition involved and in the case of elaborative rehearsal, the association with knowledge that is already present.
