Weekly Note from Mrs. Schleicher

We had a blast celebrating the 100th day of school this week! We also did a couple fun Groundhog Day activities. We also had fun choosing a faculty or staff member that we wanted to interview. Then, we learned how to conduct an interview and made an appointment to interview that person. Some students even began to interview the person they chose!

Language Arts

This week we continued the beginnings of cursive as we practiced our strokes and letters c and a. We began a new unit in vocabulary and our test will be next Tuesday. In grammar, we learned about action verbs. We took our first CARS test independently. The kids did amazing! I sent these home in your child's Friday folder, so please review the test, sign it and send it back to school on Monday. We had a great time celebrating 100th day of school in centers this week. We loved the app where we combined two apps, aging booth and chatterpix to tell about what we would be when we are 100 years old. We also wrote about what we would do if we had \$100. In honor of Groundhog Day, we had a fun competition to see how many words we could make out of the words Groundhog Day. The class was divided into 3 teams and each team only got points for words that neither of the other 2 teams wrote down. Congrats to Abigail, Ava W., Josh G., Joshua, and George for coming up with the most words that other groups didn't have on their paper!

Math

Our week was fun as we played subtraction jeopardy to review for our quiz. Then, we learned about clue words in subtraction word problems and how to solve them by writing a number model, the answer, and identifying the unit. On the 100th day of school, we filled out a 100's board and cut out the number squares. On the other side of the 100's board was a picture of each student. The last step was gluing the picture back together and creating 100 pieces of me!

Science

It was a mystery until we picked out items from our mystery bag. Each item was a type of simple machine. This is our new science concept and the kids are super excited to learn all about simple machines! We watched brainpop jr. and took the quizzes together. Also, we learned many important vocabulary words: energy, force, friction, work, push and pull. We watched a couple videos and read about inclined plane, levers, and pulleys. Jamie and Sharla even made their own pulley after school! (See picture to the left). I hope you all have fun learning along with your child with this new science topic!

Hebrew

In our ARIOT KOTEVאריאות כּוֹתֵב book, we covered the letter ל (LAMED) with a review of all the letters we already know,

practicing the formation of the letter, vocabulary withל LAMED and writing drills.

At the end of the week, we used our שָׁלוֹם SHALOM book to learn the story:אופס! (OOPS!).

Here are some verbs with the letter ל LAMED to review at home:

הוֹלֵךְ- walks, goes (holech)

לוֹמֵד- studies (lomed)

A note from the Media Center

Birthday Book Party Reminder:

Our birthday book parties for students with birthdays in December-March are coming up soon! For grades Mechina-2, the party will be Tuesday, Feb. 23. For grades 3-5, the party will be Wednesday,Feb. 24. Both parties will be before school, 7:45-8:20 a.m. Our honorees will select and check out a new book for the media center collection. We also will serve a light breakfast of fruit, (nut-free and parve) mini-muffins and water. Parents are always welcome to attend!
