WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY

~ I hope you all had a fantastic spring break and were able to enjoy the time with family and friends! We are in countdown mode to STAAR, with the 4th grade writing and 5th grade math and reading taking place NEXT week. Bobby will be talking about details tomorrow during our brief staff meeting and will be sending out schedules this week.

~ Shout out to Vickie and all the specials teachers who helped make Aladdin AMAZING! I heard it was fantastic, and I can't wait to watch the video!!

~ We will have a short staff meeting tomorrow in the library to announce campus award winners and go over STAAR details.

~I sent an email to teachers this morning with questions about technology. Please get your responses to me by Wednesday this week, so I can share at a meeting on Thursday. Sorry for the quick turnaround. they sent the email when I was out of town before we left for break. Thanks for your help!

~ Sasha is NEED of club pictures for the yearbook. Please send any club pictures her way!! Thanks in advance!! Both this session and last session are needed. The collages I made for the FB page won't work, and I think I deleted the originals.

~ I need sheets for our Be Vocabulous tags. I KNOW students are using the words, and we have had very few turned in. This is something we want to encourage, and I have seen students use these words and had parents mention it as well. Please recognize these students by turning in the forms..this helps to encourage more students to use them in conversation and writing. I know it's hard to remember, but take some time this week to sit down and fill some out... we DO have students using them, and I want to recognize that fact!

Campus News

~ Makerspace is UP AND RUNNING!! Woo-hoo! The kiddos will get to attend this week during their computer rotation! Shout out to Christine for all her work helping to get it prepared. If your students wish, they can definitely create thank you cards to our PTA for helping to fund the space!! I know they would appreciate it!!

~I'm off campus tomorrow morning for a few hours at a meeting as well as Thursday morning until noon. The Thursday meeting is when I will take the responses about the technology questions that I sent to teachers earlier today. Thanks in advance for your help.

~ Please please let Amarisa know if you can help out at UIL, either on Tuesday, April 4th or that Saturday, April 8th. We are still in need of volunteers. Remember, a catered lunch comes the way of all who volunteer!! Thanks for your help!

~ Theresa Parisi and Debbie Diffie are here tomorrow at 10:00 for science and social studies walks. Please make sure learning targets are up to date and there is evidence to show the learning taking place.

~ This Wednesday, March 22nd, Pizza Buffet will be giving 15% of their proceeds to Elkins. This is an ALL DAY event, so if your team feels like pizza for lunch, consider ordering from Pizza Buffet and tell them you're ordering to support Elkins spirit day.

~ STAAR testing is March 28th & 29th. Please make sure to communicate to parents that visitors will not be allowed on campus during those days. I will advertise via social media and email as well. Most of them know this, and we usually do not have any issues or requests to be on campus during this time. Also, please do not plan to take off on these days (unless emergency, of course), as we have to have trained personnel in the building only. Bobby may be asking some of you to test, and if so, we will make sure to get any additional subs trained that need to be.

Be Vocabulous!

Continue to discuss the vocabulary with your students! It's making a big difference!

Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.

Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!

As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...

All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.

Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
