Adult and Community Education
"In The Know" 2/7/2017
Thank You to All!
What a busy week; there are so many great things happening in adult education, and it is all made possible because of the great team we have! Attendance continues to be strong and we have added two new teachers to GGH, so we could better serve our students. We would like to welcome Patrick Gallina and Ricci Valesquez who started at GGH last week. Enrollment in the GGLC is growing steadily, and we still have room for a few more, so spread the word. We had two more students earn their high school equivalency diploma. Congratulations to Jeff Saavedra and Dell Merryman! Congratulations are also in order for our student of the month: Victor Lopez de Leon and our teacher of the month Alejandro Anderson.
This past Saturday was an opportunity for the entire community to come together and help support LWTC. LWTC held its annual “Fly-in, Cruise-in” fund raiser which helps support student scholarships. Many of our AdultEd students will benefit directly from the scholarship program as they transition on to technical training. With well over 3,500 people in attendance and over 233 cars and a variety of airplanes on display this event could not be possible without a great team. A special thank you to: Belinda Williams for spearheading the Fly-In, Cruise-in; Lionel L'Esperance, Israel Caraza, Joseph Martino and Lazaro Hernandez for all their work parking cars; Melissa Meirendorff, Lindita Lici, Cheree Jones-Diver, Scott Schnappauf and Shoshanna Helfand for supporting student clubs and assisting were needed; and to all of the adult education students volunteering at the event. This event is special for many reasons, certainly for the opportunities the scholarships provide, but equally for the opportunity for Lorenzo Walker High School, Lorenzo Walker Technical College, and Collier County Adult Education to work together toward a common goal of helping all students obtain an education that leads to a career.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) - Back to the Basics Workshop - Saturday, Feb. 11 Register Now!
ABE - Back to the Basics in Language Arts and Mathematics Workshop
This is a great opportunity for GED and ESOL instructors both to better understand the Florida’s Curriculum Framework for Adult Basic Education and develop strategies for integrating the standards into the classroom. These standards provide adult education instructors with a scope and sequence of major skills that students need in order to be successful in the workplace and real-world situations, as well as transitioning to the next academic level.
Join the IPDAE team as they focus on selected components of reading, writing, and mathematics. Learn about research-based strategies and activities that will assist you in teaching initial close reading skills in your ABE classroom. Within the writing area of this workshop, you will be introduced to strategies that will assist your students in moving from sentences to paragraphs and in the beginning development of evidence-based writing.
