Here's what's happening in MS this week!
February 18, 2019
Dear parents,
The NHS food drive starts Monday, February 18th. Bring in donations anytime this week!
NWEA testing is in full swing here in the middle school. Encourage your child to do their best!
Sixth grade students will be starting the “Kids in the Kitchen” program which will be taking place during one of their MS elective classes each week until mid April. This is a program about nutrition and making (and eating!) healthy foods offered by the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. The days will vary with the availability of the Community Health Coordinator. Ask Mrs. Goslee if you need more information.
ENGLISH
6th Grade: Students will turn in their independent reading Thought Log assessments on Monday. Students will also be taking the NWEA Language and prepping for the reading portion, which will take place next week.
7th Grade: We will be wrapping up NWEA testing this week. Our schedule has been changed quite a bit due to all the snow days but I’m optimistic that we will have a full week of school and get back on track! We will also continue reading The Giver.
8th Grade: The snow days have really thrown us off schedule but hopefully we can get back into a routine this week. We will wrap up NWEA testing and continue reading The Outsiders.
SOCIAL STUDIES
6th Grade: We are continuing our study of Ancient Greece by learning about different types of government that were used. We will also be comparing how life was different in Ancient Athens versus Ancient Sparta.
7th Grade: We will be learning about different types of government that were used in Ancient Greece. We will also be comparing how life was different in Ancient Athens versus Ancient Sparta.
MATH
6th Grade: Check power school for test scores. Any retakes should happen this week. We are learning about percents, decimals, and fractions and how they all relate to each other. If we know a fraction, we can find the decimal and percentage equivalent. NWEA testing for math will be Thursday and Friday of this week.
7th Grade: We finished our algebra unit last week so if there are retakes, they should happen this week. We are first looking at blueprints, cross sections, and then angle pairs and the special names we have for them. NWEA testing will happen Thursday and Friday for math.
8th Grade: 8th graders had a quiz last week and this week we will be learning the elimination method for solving systems of equations. NWEA testing will be Thursday and Friday for math.
SCIENCE
6th Grade: We had to reschedule NWEA testing and we’ll hopefully be able to get it done on Wednesday. Students were to get their Independent Science Investigation write-up done and turned in on the 15th. Due to snow days, I’ll accept it on Monday February 18th for full credit. We have also started to studied about Matter by discussing atoms.
7th Grade: We had to reschedule NWEA testing and we’ll hopefully be able to get it done on Wednesday. We have been studying about Continental Drift Theory and will be continuing with how it combines with seafloor spreading to create the Theory of Plate Tectonics. In particular, what causes the continents to move?
8th Grade: Too many snow days. We have been stuck in the same spot in our geologic time unit for quite awhile. Additionally, Mrs. Ecklund has been in presenting to the students the Willing to Wait program. Quiz on Life and Geologic Time next week on Thursday or Friday.
ART
8th Grade: We are wrapping up our clay unit. The students were introduced to slab build to add to their knowledge of coil built clay creations. We may venture into abstract watercolor next week.
SINCERELY,
The Middle School Team
