Supporting our community and families
Though the holidays can be โthe most wonderful time of yearโ, this season can also be incredibly stressful and difficult for some of our families.
If providing for your family over the holidays will be a hardship for you, we invite you to fill out *THIS FORM* for a Holiday Care Box. We would like to provide items for a holiday meal for you and your family.
Please be reassured that your name and information will be kept private and confidential. Ms. Smith will be the only one who is aware of the families that are signed up and will contact you directly about setting up a time for delivery.
We will keep *THIS FORM* open until Wednesday, December 14th. Please donโt hesitate to fill it out if you would like some help this season. ๐
Food Bank Donations
FRH has begun their annual Food Bank Drive Fundraiser! Leadership 9 students will be at the front doors starting Dec 1st to collect items brought in by students and staff. Our goal this year is to collect more than 2000 food items/cash donations by December 15th. If we reach that goal, students will be rewarded with a fun activity-filled afternoon on Dec 20th!
Urgently needed items for the Strathcona County food bank include the following:
- No-sugar-added canned fruit and fruit snack cups
- No-sugar-added fruit juice, both 1 litre tetra and juice boxes
- Ready-to-serve soup, chili, or stew
- Pasta sauce (low sodium)
- Whole grain crackers
Thank you in advance for helping to make this another successful fundraiser and for helping out local families in our area make this holiday a special one!

Returning Student Registration for 2023-24
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) will once again conduct an online returning student registration process to confirm student registrations for the 2023-24 school year. Families of all current studentsโwith the exception of graduating Grade 12 studentsโmust complete the process to confirm the school their child plans to attend in the 2023-24 school year or advise the Division of their plans not to return to EIPS. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration processโacceptance is based on available space. The 2023-24 returning student registration takes place Feb. 1-28, 2023.
Access to the Returning Student Registration Form is provided through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you donโt have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you need to set one up before Feb. 1, 2023.
Create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account
For more information, contact the school office at 780-467-3800.
Fee Waiver Application Deadline
If circumstances exist where youโre unable to pay school or transportation fees, you can apply to have fees waived by submitting an Application for a Waiver of Fees. The application deadline is Dec. 15, 2022. If youโre new to the Division, the deadline is the latter of Dec. 15, 2022, or 45 days after registration.
To access your fee information, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal and go to โStudent Fees.โ There you can view your fees and pay them online using Visa or MasterCard. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted.
Donโt forget to also log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal regularly throughout the year. Fees are often added to your childโs account to cover the cost of various school activities such as field trips, class projects, extracurricular activities and more.
For more information about school fees, waivers and payment deadlines, visit www.eips.ca/schools/fees and https://www.frhaythorne.ca/about/fees. Alternatively, contact Karen Bidniak at F.R. Haythorne School at 780-467-3800.
CEMC Contests
Does your child LOVE math?! Are they looking for a new way to challenge themselves? Math contests are a fun way for students to develop their problem-solving skills, build confidence and get creative with math.
Through the University of Waterloo, students are able to participate in math contests as a fun way to test their skills. These tests are ordered and proctored through the school. Contest dates for various grades are shown below:
Grade 7 โ Gauss Contest (May 17th, 2023)
Grade 8 โ Gauss Contest (May 17th, 2023)
Grade 9 โ Pascal Contest (February 22, 2023)
Grade 9 โ Fryer Contest (April 5th, 2023)
As these contests have a deadline as to when they need to be ordered, we are asking any interested families to email Mrs. Huculak (carrie.huculak@eips.ca) with the student name, grade, and contest to be written by Dec 16th. There will be NO LATE ENTRIES.

Where to Find the Information You Need
Elk Island Public Schools and F.R. Haythorne use a handful of key systems to share information with students and families. Depending on the information youโre looking for, itโs important to know where to look.
PowerSchool is the primary student information system within the Division. There is an associated app, but the functionality is limited, and families donโt need to download it. From the PowerSchool Parent Portal, you can:
- Access student grades and report cards;
- Review student absences;
- Pay school and transportation fees; and
- Submit official updates to student or family information.
The PowerSchool Student Portal provides similar access to grades and absence information for students directly.
Brightspace provides more of a day-to-day look whatโs happening with your childโs learning communicated directly from your childโs teacher. From Brightspace Parent & Guardian, you can see your childโs:
- classroom activity feed,
- grade items and grade feedback from instructors,
- upcoming assignments,
- portfolio evidence and
- quizzes
depending on which of the program functions are specifically used by your childโs teacher.
Brightspace for Students is where teachers share updates, calendar reminders and learning materials with students. Compatible with Google, it also allows students to submit assignments, complete quizzes, and see grades and teacher feedback. The Pulse app for students is associated with Brightspace for Students.
SchoolMessenger is the system the Division and schools use to send email and phone communication to families. The contact information in SchoolMessenger is populated from PowerSchool. Through SchoolMessenger, families can:
- receive general, emergency and attendance messages by phone, email or both; and
- manage their subscription preferences for these types of messages.
The easiest way to stay connected is to download the SchoolMessenger app. Get the latest updates direct to your mobile device and enable push notifications to never miss a message. Families can also check back on past messagesโfor up to 30 daysโdirectly in the app rather than searching to find an old message buried in your inbox.
If you have trouble accessing any of these systems or have questions about them, contact F.R Haythorne School at 780-467-3800.
