4-H STAFF NEWS!
Please be sure to read through the below information which contains important dates and processes for 4-H participation at the Winona County Fair and other events to register for! Remember, most of our event registrations are taking place in 4-H Online now. If your 4-H'er is attending an event and would like to bring a friend - there is an option in 4-H Online to select In-person 4-H Camp/Event for a youth not currently enrolled in the program to participate.

Making Plans for your 2023 Fair Projects?
All animals desired to be exhibited as 4-H Projects at the 2023 Winona County Fair must be identified in 4-H Online by May 15th 2023. Species specific information, ID requirements and help guides can be found at: https://z.umn.edu/2023AnimalID.
If your livestock require 4-H tags, you can stop by the Winona County Extension Office at 225 W 2nd St. Winona 55987 to pick them up from 8-4:30 p.m. M-F.
Project areas that require IDs are: breeding heifers, cow/calf pairs, prospect calves (steers and heifers), dairy, dairy goats, dog, horse, llama-alpaca, meat goats, poultry (doves and pigeons), rabbits, sheep, and swine. https://z.umn.edu/2023AnSciUpdates. IDing animals in 4honline guide.
If your 4-H'er plans to show static projects and is enrolled in 4-H Online you can register your 4-H'ers projects in FairEntry from May 1- June 1st. The direct link to login and register will be sent on May 1st along with directions for navigating FairEntry via email. Market Sheep & Goat Weigh-Ins!
Join the 4-H Sheep and Goat Projects on Saturday, May 6th at Lewiston Sales for Market Sheep and Goat Weigh-Ins! Weigh-ins are not required but strongly encouraged to help families ID their projects, weigh their animals (required for rate of gain eligibility) and ask questions about the upcoming fair season! Mika will have donuts and coffee for our wonderful volunteers!

4-H Engineering Design Challenge Kick Off Event - Lewiston MN
Learn more about engineering design and the 2023 Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge. The theme for this year’s Engineering Design Challenge honors the 10 year anniversary of this program: Take Your Best Shot and Celebrate!
Create and think like an engineer at the upcoming Engineering Design Challenge Kickoff Event for all Southeast Region Counties! Our multi-county training will be held Saturday, May 20 at the Lewiston-Altura Elementary School, 115 Fremont St. S., Lewiston, MN 55987. This is a three-hour training that will begin at 9:00 a.m. This event will also provide hands-on training for adults to provide support to teams as they complete the challenge. We encourage club or county teams.

Summer Day Camps
Once again, Winona County 4-H will be offering Summer Day Camps for youth in grades K-5.
All camps will run from 9 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per youth, per day. Please join us for all the fun and don't forget to invite your friends! Please register in 4honline.com and contact Mika with any questions!

June 15th: Fun with Fine Arts (Centennial Park, Altura)
July 20th: Chef for a Day (Faith Lutheran Church, Winona)
August 8th: Backyard Olympics/Games (Michael LaCanne, Goodivew)
August 10th: Circuit Science (Michael LaCanne, Goodview)
4-H Regional Summer Camp at Whitewater State Park
Have fun, meet new friends and explore new things at 4-H Regional Camp at Whitewater State Park! Campers will spend three days and two nights at camp enjoying swimming, hiking, nature activities, games, the arts, music, crafts, educational programs, great food, cabin life, reflective campfires and more!
(June 22-24, 2023: Grades 6-8) (June 25-27, 2023: Grades 3-5) - Cost: $100/Camper - if cost is a concern for your family, please contact your local 4-H Educator to discuss options. Registration fee includes meals and lodging for three days/two nights, supplies, water bottle, and a camp t-shirt. Registration fees are non-refundable. Thanks to our Countywide fundraising efforts, this event qualifies for half reimbursement from Winona County 4-H. Reimbursements will be sent AFTER camp takes place and attendee information is received from Regional Staff.
Yello Leadership Event
Youth Exploring Leadership and Learning Opportunities (YELLO) is a 4-H leadership conference for youth in grade 7+ that prepares youth to learn and lead in their communities. YELLO is planned and facilitated by the Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors.
Our 2023 conference will include engaging and interactive activities. The conference will be held June 13-16 at Bemidji State University. Registration opens early April in 4honline.com.
- Build and learn skills to reach goals and plan for the future.
- Explore careers, college and other topics of interest through interactive workshops.
- Develop positive connections to other youth and adults through small and large groups, workshops and other interactive sessions.
- Take health breaks to recharge and process learning.
State Arts-In
Youth in grades 9+ can register for State Arts-In. Registrants will rank their choices of "majors" to participate in: band, tech, costuming, and performing. Directors will make final selections of major choices. Those who register by June 30 will receive a $50 discount. Meetings !!
Fall Harvest Meeting
The Fall Harvest Committee meeting will be Monday, May 22nd, at 7:00PM at the Lewiston Altura HS in the media center. We ask that one representative from each club attends. We met in April to discuss last years event, set a 2023 date (September 24th 2023), and to start planning.

If you and your project groups would like to meet in May please let Mika know. There currently is not a full meeting scheduled but if you would like to meet individually to welcome new families/share information - that is encouraged!
Congratulations to the Senior Horse Bowl Team on competing at State!
The Winona County Senior Horse Bowl Team competed at State in Sauk Rapids. Even though they didn’t win, they had a wonderful time and it was a great experience! The Team tried their best and created memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you to Elisabeth Smith who helped mentor the Horse Bowl Teams!

Scholarships!
MN State Fair Scholarships
The Minnesota State Fair Foundation will award up to 22 scholarships of $1,000 each to young adults from greater Minnesota or those currently enrolled in an agriculture program. New in 2023, one $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student of any age entering a skilled trade career or furthering their training. Applications for the Minnesota State Fair Scholarship are due Aug. 1. These opportunities have also been added to the 4-H scholarships, grants and awards page on the University of Minnesota Extension website.
Winona State Scholarship Opportunity
The John and Betty Waldo Scholarship has been established as a renewable scholarship for a deserving high school graduate that is either a current Winona County 4-H member or participated in the Winona County 4-H program for a minimum of four years. The scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis and applied exclusively towards payment of tuition and fees. The award will be renewed for a maximum four-year period contingent upon the recipient maintaining minimum standards. If you or someone you know fits the qualifications for this scholarship please share this opportunity with them. (Only students who have been admitted can login to apply.)
