District Staff News
September 23, 2019
Thank you to our certified staff for your work on your classroom management plans. These plans help align our work across the system so we can provide you additional support, should problems arise in your classroom.
We know you cannot have a successful classroom experience if kids are being distracted by behavioral issues. And while we know many of our teachers have always focused on creating strong classroom management plans, it's important we have this implemented districtwide. That allows us to align our work so there's common language around classroom expectations.
The classroom management plan is meant to be a tool for the building administrator and teacher to reflect on sound classroom expectations around behavior; to create opportunities for additional support, and to ensure a consistent approach throughout the district with regard to classroom behavior expectations.
A couple other items of note:
- The district is exploring the possibility of a bond to fund facilities improvements in 2020. We will be seeking input on what you think needs improvement. Currently, a research firm is conducting a poll in the community for feedback. After needs are identified, the Board will determine whether to pursue the bond. The district does not anticipate any increases to the current tax rate to fund any projects.
- We'll also be asking for your feedback in the next couple of weeks on how we can ensure we're serving all students. As part of our Continuous Improvement Plan process, we have conducted a needs assessment and identified three areas of focus: creating a positive school climate, improving core literacy instruction, and ensuring strong partnerships and communication with our community. This plan will help inform our application for funds from the Student Success Act. Your administrator will let you know about your staff listening session in the coming days.
Thank you for all you do for the kids in our district!
Best,
These adoptions include Science, ELA, Social Sciences, World Language, and the Arts. We will be working with various groups and we look forward to having engagement from teachers k-12. An interest survey will be provided soon so that we can capture your feedback and participation. A website will be created and shared with you so that all communication regarding this work can be shared with all teachers.

We continue to work with our community partner’s to highlight September as Suicide Awareness Month. Here are some additional resources to access on-going information regarding supports, information, etc.:
2) Great resource that kids and adults love: https://seizetheawkward.org/
3) American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has great resources for the month here: https://afsp.org/campaigns/national-suicide-prevention-week-2019/
4) American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk on October 5th in Portland. Clackamas County would love to have folks from Canby join – the more the merrier! ALL are welcome!!! Link to the team page is here:https://afsp.donordrive.com/team/213146.
And again, I remind and urge all staff...if you are concerned about a student, speak up and report your concerns to your school counselor immediately. It takes all of us to prevent youth suicide.
Adi’s Act, Senate Bill 52 requires that all schools in Oregon have suicide prevention policies including post-vention procedures in place by the end of this school year. We are working with ODE, Clackamas County Behavioral Health and other local school districts to develop comprehensive policies.
On another note, thank you classroom teachers and teams for working so diligently on your classroom management plans! This is the first step to continued Tier 1 implementation across K-12, and the momentum is catching. Schools are identifying their School Climate Teams this month and those teams will have their initial meeting on September 26.

The district wellness committee met for our first champion meeting on Thursday September 19th. Thank you to the champions who participated in our discussion. In our push to find sustainable practices for employee wellness after this year, we are proposing that each building start by creating their own wellness committee. Champions from each building will be working with their administrators to create a plan for this. We hope this encourages a grassroots effort to give our employees wellness options and support throughout our busy year.
Thank you to the building administrators for allowing the grant coordinators to propose this first step at their meeting on September 10th. We look forward to working with all employees in building a lasting culture of wellness within our district.
Our first Hike and Hops was Sunday, September 21st at Mary S. Young park and O.C. Brew. Thanks to those who participated! Hope to see you at next month’s hike!

Edutopia just published an article about some strategies educators are using to provide content-rich, engaging lessons with high levels of challenge and support - regardless of whether students have fully mastered the language of instruction.
