Readers Workshop

Our young students are actively engaged in reading every day. They are building reading stamina as they read independently, with a buddy or in a guided group. Our guided reading groups meet daily and focus on skills specific to the child's reading level. The guided reading groups are purposely planned and target a wide range of skills including: decoding, fluency, comprehension, phonics and goal setting.

We are launching our language workshop unit on problem solving. The essential question we will focus on for the upcoming weeks is Why is problem solving important? Students will discover that problem solving strategies can be used to work through every day challenges.

Math Workshop

First grade mathematicians are actively investigating numbers and what they mean. We are currently focused on place value. We are learning that every number has a place and every place has a value. In math workshop students are working in small groups focused on specific skills which will help them to grow as mathematicians.

A journal prompt that will be given throughout the year is: write everything you know about the number_______.

Writers Workshop

Our first grade writers have spent the month of September learning how to generate topics, tell the story across their fingers, to sketch and write. Now we are learning how writers revise and elaborate on their work. Through conferencing and small group lessons the students are learning to read through their stories and make changes. The students are learning how to make their writing longer and better.

Reminders...

Thank you to those families who have sent in headphones or earbuds. If you haven't sent headphones in yet please do so as soon as possible, the students use their ipads daily and the headphones really help them focus on their work.

Our Veteran's Day Walk and fall parties will be on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Please send the permission slips for the walk to school if you haven't done so already. Kids may bring an appropriate costume in a bag to school on 10/26 for the party if they choose to.

Please check your class Shutterfly site for updates on party donations.

Many thanks to Tim Fleming for visiting our first graders and teaching them about fire safety. Rose Glen also had a visit from the Town of Waukesha FD!

We have two upcoming field trips planned. We will be going to the planetarium on November 21st. The planetarium is located at Retzer Nature Center and we welcome parents to meet us there to view the program with us.

December 14 all first graders will be heading to the First Stage Theater to see the Rudolph production. We hope to take some chaperones to the theater, however, we have a limited number of tickets to see Rudolph. Additional information and permission slips will be coming home in the near future.
