Homer Highlights

Week of September 13, 2021

Dear Families,

It is beginning to look and feel like fall! We are also experiencing our first full week of school. We encourage you to make sure that you are aware of the best ways to communicate with your student's teachers. All teachers have a school email address. These are all available on the district website, under staff directory. In the elementary, you can also communicate through Dojo. If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to first reach out to your child's teacher. Creating a PowerSchool account is another way to stay connected with your child's attendance and grades (MS/HS). Open communication is the best way to help ensure that your student is as successful as possible!

Middle School Harvestfest this Friday!

Please note that there has been a change to the location of the Middle School Fall Festival. We will now be holding an outdoor event, in the courtyard area to the right of the main entrance! This is the grassy area to the left of the high school gym. Just follow the sidewalk from the circle drive!

Homer Senior Night!

This is an important event for all seniors and their parents. It is a great opportunity to learn about many of the valuable resources available as students start to think about their next step after graduation. Whether they are contemplating college, trade school, military service, or entering the world of work, this evening will help provide students and families with the tools to help with this transition. Representatives from Kellogg Community College, Jackson College, Adrian College, and Spring Arbor University will be on hand to answer questions.

Fall PSAT and SAT Testing Available for Students

The Michigan Department of Education will be making PSAT testing available to all 9, 10, and 11 grade students this fall, as well as SAT testing for any interested senior. This is not required. In Homer, we will be testing all juniors with the PSAT/NMSQT as part of their preparation for the SAT in the Spring. For all other grades, we will only be testing those students that request testing. Students that opt to not test will attend school for a normal school day. All testing will take place on Wednesday, October 13. If large numbers of underclassmen opt to test, we may look at an alternative test date for these students. Please fill out the form below ONLY if you are the parent/guardian of a 9th, 10th, or 12th grade student and you would like to have them participate in fall testing.

Preschool Openings!

If you have a child that turns 4 by September 1st and you are interested in learning more about preschool opportunities, the Community Unlimited Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) still has openings available! Please call them directly for more information!

Menu Changes!

If you are curious about what is for lunch, you can always access the monthly K-12 lunch menu on our website under the Quick Links/K-12 Menu tab. Due to some shortages from some of our vendors, there may be days when there is a menu change from what is posted. We appreciate your understanding, and know that our food service department will provide a healthy and delicious breakfast and lunch to our students every day!

Help Us Keep Our Students Safe!

Please remember to follow the Daily Student Health Screener and check your child each morning for symptoms. Limiting potential exposure can help keep all of our students in school every day!

COVID Notifications

Just a reminder...for the 2021--22 school year, the district will post all notifications of confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 on the district website and on the district COVID dashboard, in accordance with MDHHS Emergency Order under MCL 333.2253 - Reporting of Confirmed and Probable Cases of COVID-19 at Schools. We will not be doing callouts this year. Please check the website at www.homerschools.net for all updates and notifications.

We are still required to complete contact tracing in cooperation with the Calhoun County Health Department, using the close contact definition of "within 6 feet for 15 minutes cumulatively within a 24 hour period." While we do not require masks (except on school buses), we do strongly encourage all families to continue to follow the best practices as outlined by the CDC and MDHHS, which includes staying home if sick, frequent hand-washing and sanitizing, proper covering of coughs and sneezes, and the use of masks.
