Recording Outstanding Education
Volume III, No. 8
Nassau County School District continues to have positive events occurring on our campuses. Take a look at some of the things that have happened recently.
Through PBIS funds from school fundraisers, Callahan Elementary School's PBIS committee purchased two "Buddy Benches" for their playground. The benches are designed for children to use if they are ever on the playground and have no one to play with. Students can sit on the bench and another student will ask them to play. Lessons during "Bully Week" will be paired with the unveiling of the benches on their campus.
Blaze Bucks = Teacher Pie
As part of the PBS at Wildlight Elementary, students earn Blaze Bucks for following the school-wide expectations. Students can cash in their Blaze Bucks for various rewards, and Mrs. Thompson’s former student cashed his in to pie her in the face.
Calling All Moms
Wildlight Elementary School had a great turnout for their first meeting of The Calling. Over 40 moms joined, totaling over 105 people in attendance, in which Moms and their kids shared a yummy breakfast while learning about monthly meeting expectations. They also played a fun game of Would You Rather and took home journals to begin communicating in a meaningful way. Wildlight is excited to see what next month holds!
Yulee Middle School's Engaged Citizenship course is making an impact on their campus. Teachers, students, and their parents helped to spread beauty and positivity by painting positive quotes in the restrooms. The students selected the quotes and spent a Saturday creating a positive environment.

Yulee Middle would like to extend a huge thank you to Lowe's, Home Depot, and ACE Hardware for donating paint, and painting supplies so that this dream could become a reality. They'd also like to thank the 15 parents, students, and teachers that were able to help support the school with their artistic ability.
Music Becomes Games
Mr. Arnold's students in his Understanding Music course at Callahan Middle School, created board games to show what they've learned so far about music.
Then they took turns playing the games and testing their understanding of all of the content.
Students in Mrs. Martin's Kindergarten classroom, at Southside Elementary, recently had a great field trip! They visited Celestial Farms to discover farm animals, their characteristics, and their feeding habits. Students were also able to explore the garden areas. Everyone had an amazing time!
PowWow in Hilliard
Hilliard Elementary's 3rd Annual PowWow, Chili Cookoff, and Chair Auction was another huge success! Students, families and the community were educated and entertained by Jim Sawgrass and other members of the Muskogee Creek Indian Tribe. Sawgrass shared his knowledge of Native America and attendees were entertained by tribal dancing which included a World-Class Hoop Dancer. HES also held its annual chair auction with over 40 chairs that were decorated by classes and staff. Everyone had a great time!
Donuts with Dad
Yulee Primary's faculty welcomed Dads to share donuts and read with their students. Over 300 dads, grandparents, and men came to read, help with AR tests, walk students to class and share a donut.
Rockin' Into Learning
Mr. Bozeman, at Fernandina Beach Middle School, had his students construct their learning as scientists and researchers. The students pictured, Terrence Jones, Abigail Gearis, and Samira Dean were just part of his 1st-period class that explored rock formations. Students were using their understanding of how rocks are formed and their characteristics in order to correctly identify a mystery rock. They were using features like interlocking crystal formations, black, glassy features, and banded patterns to understand what igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks look like. Afterward, they researched how these rocks are used in day-to-day life.
Cows, Pirates, and Books
Emma Love Hardee Elementary recently held its Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night to enjoy dinner and reading.
Students and Staff dressed as their favorite book characters for the event. It was a great night for all!
