JSMS LOVES OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS!
National School Counseling Week 2019
National School Counseling Week 2019, “School Counselors: Providing Lessons for Life,” will be celebrated from Feb. 4-8, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. This week, sponsored by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA), highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
Parent Teacher Conference Day
- Parent Teacher Conference Day is scheduled for February 8th. In an effort to accommodate parents, we ask you to consider doing 3 hours that week and half-day (3.5 hours) on Friday morning. If you are unable to do the evening hours, you may plan on completing your normal work day for conferences on Friday. Since this day is specifically designated as a parent-teacher conference day and not a planning day, we ask that you please communicate your availability to all of your parents and that you are intentional in reaching out to parents of students who may be struggling academically or behaviorally. Also, if you have open hours designate them as open walk-in times, but that it is recommended to schedule a time in case those times are taken by another parent walk-in. PLEASE SUBMIT ALL FINAL CONFERENCE SCHEDULES BY THE END OF THE DAY ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH.
- PLEASE make sure that you initiate a conference with any student who is failing or in danger of failing your class for the nine weeks.
- PLEASE make sure you schedule a conference with anyone who is currently on a 2A or 2B Behavior contract. Please make sure you take this opportunity to communicate with any family of a student who you think may end up on a 2A contract.
2019 TN Retirement Information Sessions
Whether you are thinking about retirement this year or in 20 years, all employees are encouraged to attend these meetings. It is never too early to plan for retirement! These meetings will help you gain a better understanding of your plan at retirement, social security options, and other retirement plans that may be available to you to help you fully enjoy retirement.
Date: February 22, 2019
- Time: 10:00 am, Location: ASC Building, Tennessee Room
- Time: 4:00 pm, Location: ASC Building, Tennessee Room
These meetings will include the following information:
i. An overview of the retirement process for KCS employees by the KCS HR Department.
(*Note there are changes in the retirement process, such as online applications with TCRS)
ii. Tim Crawford from Great West (formerly Empower) retirement company will review the
TCRS and Hybrid plans, social security planning and optional benefits that are available
through Great West. Tim is the regional representative contracted through the state of
Tennessee to assist employees with retirement planning for those employees who
participate in TCRS or the new Hybrid retirement plan.
Please keep in mind that Great West also offers optional 401(k) and 403(b) plans for all employees if you would like to consider other retirement plan options.
Anyone who would like to hear about any of the above plans is welcome to attend. Spouses are welcome as well.
Each meeting is anticipated to last about an hour and a half.
Tuition and Zoning Requests
The tuition/zoning application process for the 19-20 school year will open March 1. I know I have had recent questions from parents regarding next year, so hopefully this is beneficial information for you.
Duty and Supervision Action Team Report
- It is an expectation that you will be at your duty at the assigned day and time. This is happening for the vast majority of you, but we have noticed that this can be an issue from time to time. We will be watching this more closely and will send an email directly to the teacher who is not on duty. Please be aware that this will be documented toward your professionalism at the end of the year.
- When you are absent, we need you to make arrangements to have your duty covered. Subs should not be covering your duty. A suggestions was made to work it out in advance with a partner teacher to cover for each other and to notify with a quick text when you are out. Whatever you plan, you need to make sure you have the duty covered. This also applied to lunch and hall/bathroom duty. All locations are essential for supervision and we will be held liable if there is not coverage due to negligence and an incident happens in that area.
- Morning duty is 7:15-7:35. Please make morning plans so that you show up on time and plan to stay until 7:35 at your duty location. Afternoon duty is 2:45-3:05. On duty days, you will need to plan to have a quick exit out of your classroom to be at your duty location on time.
I have included links to our duty schedules below for your reference. They are also available in the JSMS shared drive. It is the work of all of us that contributes to making Sevier a great place to work and a safe place for our students to learn. Thank you all for all that you do!

JSMS Geography Bee
The annual National Geographic GeoBee is a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Questions cover not only geography, but also cultures, physical features, history and earth science.
JSMS school champion, Damon Dean, has competed in the bee as a 6th, 7th, and 8th grader and has since taken an online qualifying test to become eligible to compete in the State GeoBee in Nashville this spring. Good luck, Damon! We are proud of you, and it was truly inspiring to watch all 21 Sevier students display their geography knowledge!
