NO September Meeting

Wednesday, September 14th would be our first meeting of the 2022-23 school year. However, Jefferson's Back to School Night is happening at the same time.

So we will join the Back to School Night activities. We will have a table set up where you can stop by and see us, get information about what we do, membership and volunteer opportunities. I am sure we will have treats and goodies too! And we will be selling Jefferson gear :)

Looking ahead to October . . .

Our first General meeting of the year will be October 12th, we will:

  • elect new officers
  • review and approve the standing rules
  • review and approve the budget for the year
  • share committees and what they do
  • new business/ideas/questions

Please come and check us out. We look forward to seeing you!

About Jefferson PTSA Meetings

We are back to meeting in person!

Meetings are the second Wednesday of each month. We have snacks and connection at 6:15 with the official meeting beginning at 6:30. If you face the school, the door is on the ground floor to the right of the stairs.

We will meet in the Blazer/Community Room at Jefferson. The entrance is on the N Commercial Ave side of the school. We always have some snacks and drinks.

Everyone in the Jefferson community is welcome to attend the PTSA meetings. PTSA stands for Parent, Teacher, Student Association which doesn't fully describe who we are. Alumni, grandparents, caregivers, SEI, Latino Network, anyone who is part of the Jefferson community is invited. You are encouraged to become a member of the PTSA but it is not a requirement for attending meetings.

Come check us out and see what we're about. The PTSA is here to support the Jefferson students, staff and families. If you are looking for a way to get involved and/or be informed, the PTSA is a great way to do that.

Looking Back at 2021-22

The past few years have been full of unique challenges for all of us. The PTSA had its fair share of obstacles as well. Our membership and volunteer engagement was understandably down. Many of our fundraising opportunities were limited. We had to continue with virtual meetings to keep everyone safe but it took a toll on many. We lost some board members mid year. But we kept our heads up and we are pretty proud of what we were able to accomplish.

Here are some highlights from last year:

We continued a flourishing and extensive community food pantry to support families that we started when school buildings closed in March 2020

We continued this newsletter to help keep families and community members connected and informed. The PTSA newsletter began in the fall of 2020 when school went virtual

The on going Jefferson PTSA Bottle Drop fundraiser is growing little by little. We raise over $900 last year!

We applied for and were awarded a $1000 Metro Grant to support the food pantry

We held several staff appreciation events including holiday goodie bags for each staff member and a week long spread in May during teacher appreciation week including a breakfast spread, a lunch and lots of treats.

A fabulous senior celebration with lots of good food and prizes

We funded $500 worth of books for the library

We funded a teacher grant that paid for a specific kind of computer for the podcast studio in the library

We provided funds for MEChA's International assembly and food tasting

We awarded three $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors

We also had many wonderful Guest Speakers at our meetings including . . .

  • David Mayne, PPS Bond Communications Manager and the Jefferson Modernization Team
  • Kiante Holmes, Jefferson's school social worker
  • Yolanda Frazier, Community Outreach Director for ASK, Inc (Airway Science for Kids)
  • Jamaal Tibbs, District and Family Liaison for PPS
  • Principal Allen
  • Chairperson of Portland Public School Board, Director Michelle DePass

Consider Becoming a PTSA Officer

WE NEED YOU!

The current PTSA Board have maxed out their terms in the offices they hold. It is possible for us to move into different roles. But we are really in need of folks willing to step into officer roles including President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Two people can share a position too.

Those of us who are currently involved aren't going anywhere and will be very supportive and engaged as new folks step up. There is a lot of work to do but with more people volunteering and doing what they can it lessens the load on all of us.

In addition to board officers, we are looking for student representatives. Your voice and input is incredibly valuable to what we do to support Jefferson.

Contact any board member for more information, current board members' contact info is at the bottom of this newsletter.

Looking for Volunteers

We are looking for folks who are interested in helping out with concessions at home sporting events this fall. It's a fun volunteer activity! If you are interested, contact Georgie Honl at georgiehonl@yahoo.com.

Jefferson Senior Celebration

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2022!

In June of 2020, we were not able to host any type of senior party. In June of 2021, we were able to pull together a modified version of a celebration. It really meant a lot to us after students had spent a year going to school from their homes.

This past year we were able to host a full celebration with some adjustments like having outdoor space. In recent years, we have held the party at school and paired it with the senior awards assembly in order to be more inclusive and accessible for all of the seniors.

On the afternoon of June 3rd, the PTSA hosted the Class of 2022 Celebration. It was held in the large gym and the small parking lot and the bleachers. We had Island Nectar Hawaiian Shaved Ice food cart which was a big hit. There was also pizza donated by Mississippi Pizza pub and Jack's chicken Wongs from Alberta Street Market. There was a raffle with over 50 really cool prizes including the grand prize laptop! We had a prize wheel with lots of small prizes like Dutch Bros gift cards. The Multnomah County Library donated tons of new young adult books. There was a wonderfully diverse selection and seniors were able grab what they liked for some great summer reading. And we had a photo booth with photographer Tim Horn. The students had a great time!

It took many months of planning, donation solicitation, coordination and a ton of tasks to complete. We want to extend a very big thank you to all of the sponsors, donors, parent volunteers, staff, Multnomah County Library, Tim Horn photographer, and Island Nectar!

A list of all of our sponsors and donors is in our June Newsletter, if you want to check it out. . .
