EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Weekly NEWSLETTER - December 19, 2016
Hello, FSA friends and family!
My heart is overflowing with excitement and joy right now. I can report with confidence that not only are our FSA students very talented academically, but they are also quite proficient athletically as well! :)
Our JV Basketball Team won their second game last week with an impressive final score of 46-23! The team regrouped following their first game, which ended with a loss. In true Mustang fashion, our students went "all out" to learn from their first game. They scheduled extra practices. They recruited new players from within the school. They showed the power of perseverance. And we could not be more proud of them!
It was truly a thrill to sit on our new bleachers last week and watch so many points be added to the HOME side of our new gymnasium scoreboard. The parent/student support during the games makes a huge impact and is very appreciated. Go Mustangs!
As we wrap up the first semester this week, I hope you will take a few moments to please read through our weekly newsletter. Once again, it's filled with photos and writeups about the myriad experiences occurring within our school. Our newsletter is the primary portal through which we communicate important school-related news to you, so we appreciate your willingness to read it in its entirety. I think you'll be exhilarated to read about all that is happening here, from our youngest students to our high schoolers!
On behalf of everyone here at FSA, I send my very best wishes to you and your families for an enjoyable and relaxing holiday break. We feel so fortunate to have you as part of the FSA family, a small school with a very large heart!
Sincerely,
Kenan Sener
Principal
FSA Quote of the Week
Sage Dining Services Being Considered for 2017/2018 School Year
In response to multiple parent requests for in-school dining, FSA is currently looking into a new lunch program that would benefit all FSA students starting in August 2017.
Sage Dining is a company that prepares top-quality food on site. If we work with this company, Sage will create a menu based on our students' needs, including dietary requirements. The food is fresh and nutritious... Sage uses as much local produce as possible.
To learn more about Sage, please take a moment to visit their website and view the video, which includes a link below.
We are excited about the possibility of offering this kind of lunch program to our students next year! To learn more, or if you have questions or comments, please email Vice Principal, Michelle Campbell, at mcampbell@fultonscienceacademy.org. Thank you!
Annual Fundraising Campaign Continues - Nearly $78,000 Raised Towards $150,000 Goal
Every week, we get one step closer towards hitting that magic number! On Tuesday, November 29, FSA launched our Annual Fund campaign, with an important and ambitious goal of raising $150,000 prior to 12/31/16.
As of today, approximately 33% of our families (our goal is 100% participation) have made a much-appreciated donation, and we have raised just shy of $78,000 (our goal is $150,000).
To those who have donated, THANK YOU! Remember, if we achieve 100% family participation, Principal Sener has agreed to get slimed! :)
We realize schedules are hectic; if you have not yet had a chance to participate, please consider supporting the campaign in any of the following ways.
1. Donating online by clicking here.
2. Setting up a personal fundraising page and invite your peers to support our campaign by clicking here.
3. Talking to your company about making a year-end gift to FSA.
4. Mailing or hand-delivering a check to: FSAPS, Office of Advancement, 3035 Fanfare Way, Alpharetta, GA 30009.
Every single donation moves us one step closer to reaching our goal. Please make your year-end charitable giving matter; please give the gift of award-winning education.
FSA Students "Wow" With Impressive PSAT Results!
Congratulations to those FSA students who took the PSAT in October; test results arrived last week and they are very impressive!
The PSAT is an excellent way for the students to practice for the SAT. We are very proud of those students who sat for this rigorous exam. Bravo, kids!
We would like to offer a very special kudos to those FSA students who scored in the 95th percentile and above nationally!

FSA Students Participate in Global Trip to Costa Rica
As we send this newsletter to you, our FSA students (led by Sra Carmona) are in the air flying back to Atlanta! We can't wait to welcome them back to school tomorrow! :)
It would be hard to discuss all of the incredible wonders our students have enjoyed their trip to this beautiful country, so here are a few special moments. Enjoy!
FSA's adventure begins last Sunday at 7 am as students prepared to board their flight to Costa Rica.

Students stayed with a non-English speaking host family. At first, it was scary, but after the first day, students loved their "mamá and papá ticos".
Students also had time to learn some Latino moves and cook some delicious Hispanic food.
According to Sra Carona, "Coming to Costa Rica was a great immersion experience for the students! They had an opportunity to use their communicative skills to order food and supplies, buy products at the supermarket, talk freely during their on-site Spanish class, and embrace simple tasks that we sometimes take for granted in our Native tongue; for example, just asking for WiFi passwords at the locations where we stayed.
Since the people in Costa Rica did not speak English, students needed to speak in Spanish in order to communicate with the people around them. The students had a lot of fun and can't wait to come back!"

Important Lunch and Cold Weather Reminders
FSA Families... Please be reminded that Smart Lunches will be closed on December 21 and 22. They will not be delivering food on those days to FSA. If you usually order food through Smart Lunches, you will need to send in a packed lunch from home for your child on those days.
Also, as you are aware, chillier temperatures are here! :) Please send your students with their coats (any color or style, warm, outside coat is acceptable), hats and gloves. Teachers will be using their best judgment as to whether to take students outside or keep them inside in their rainy day classrooms. Thank you!
This week's bell schedule
Please see a revised bell schedule for this week below. We ask that you please make a note of this schedule if you plan to drop off lunch, take your child for an appointment, or pick up your son/daughter for early dismissal.
High School Finals schedule
Middle School students who are taking high school classes will take the same finals at the time(s) listed below, but will remain in school following their usual schedule. Thank you!
FSA Service Learning Club - Semester One sUMMARY
FSA’s SERVICE LEARNING CLUB concluded their work for the Blessings in a Backpack food drive this past week. We would like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to all who helped us be a part of the solution to childhood hunger! Also, a huge THANK YOU to Ms. Rodgers for being the Club Captain in charge of our school's wonderful Service Learning Club!!! :)
Thanks to the generosity of our FSA supporters, we were able to pack a total of 180 food bags that were distributed to students in need in our area during November and December.
In addition, there were many items placed in our donation boxes that were not the single serving sized items used by Blessings in a Backpack. We were able to donate these to North Fulton Community Charities. So, thanks to your generosity, we were able to serve our community in two meaningful ways this holiday season.
Service Learning Club students continually expressed their joy in being able to collect and prepare these items for others who are less fortunate. Not only did this initiative help those who might have otherwise gone hungry, our students benefited and learned from the experience as well. Serving the community and helping others – the true spirit of the holidays!!!
Teachers Embrace Holiday Spirit with a Fun Tacky Sweater Contest
Middle School Aquarium Field Trip
Maybe it's the science behind the exhibits, the special age-appropriate school presentations, the hands on action, the fascination that most students have with the underworld, or the joy of discovering with their friends....Regardless, the field trip was a huge success, as witnessed through these wonderful photos that recount the day!
Six Flags Summer Reading Program
Are you looking for a great way to keep your child engaged in reading during the summer months? If so, we hope you will please consider the Six Flags Summer Reading Program.
Details on this program have been included via FSAConnec, as well as in students' take-home folders. This is an optional scholastic support opportunity for our students, but it's one we hope you'll consider seriously.
To participate in this program, please have your son/daughter complete the reading log which requires at least six hours of reading time. This log should be completed by January 27 for consideration. Once approved, students will earn free admission to Six Flags Over Georgia during the 2017 Summer season!

Heartwarming Classroom News
The Kindness Tree
At FSA, we are very proud to be a small school with a BIG heart. This week, our Pre K- 3rd grade students engaged in a "KINDNESS TREE" experiment.
Students were asked to please think about how they could "Light up the world with kindness."
After pondering this question, students wrote their responses on a lightbulb that matched their grade and placed it on the elementary kindness tree.
What a beautiful visual representation of how kindness counts; it can illuminate darkness and turn a frown upside down!
