3rd & 4th Updates
Week of January 2
Happy New Year!
If your child borrowed books over the holidays, please have them return them no later than this Friday, January 6. This includes class library books and our Language Arts book, Senderos. Thank you in advance!
What Are We Learning?
Science
We are starting the New Year off with a STEM activity, making marble mazes out of cardboard and straws. This gives our students the opportunity to show their creativity, use some engineering skills, problem solve and improve their team work. We will then move on to continue our study of the human body with the skeletal and nervous systems.
Math
Fractions will be our primary focus over the week. We will be reviewing adding/subtracting fractions and equivalent fractions before moving on to mixed numbers and improper fractions. Please be sure to those math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) fresh through daily practice. IXL is a great resource to do this. If you need your child's username/password, please let me know.
Language Arts
Both grades will start the year with a New Years writing activity, outlining their goals for the year and how they can achieve them. In addition to writing, we will be working on reading comprehension strategies. Please make sure your child is reading at home in both languages. I highly recommend the Epic! reading app and the Pierce Country LIbrary System for level appropriate books. If you need help selecting or finding books in Spanish, please contact me.
Third grade will read "La tecnología gana el juego" this week and work on sequence of events. Fourth grade will be working on "Un domingo súper especial" and focusing on characterization and cause/effect. Fourth grade will have a spelling test this Friday on the spelling list for "Un domingo súper especial" which was distributed before Christmas.
Social Studies
Students will be putting their map skills to use this week creating their own island. We will be reviewing cardinal directions, the compass rose, legends, symbols, etc. as students work individually to create their own community.
