Trimester Three Grading Plan
As noted in Dr. LaSusa's previous correspondence on grading, I am following up with the grading plan for the K-5 schools. After a lengthy discussion with the K-5 administrative team, it was decided that we would implement the following grading plan for the last trimester of the 19-20 school year. Instead of a Pass/Fail system, the K-5 team will use the coding as noted below.
Complete - (C) Students participated in almost all of the work that was given
Partially Complete - (PC) - Students participated in some of the work that was given
Incomplete - (IC) - Students did not participate in the work that was given
These codes will take the place of the number system (1-4) that was used for the first two trimesters of the school year. Due to the many complexities of assessing student work during remote learning, we will only be giving one "grade" for each subject area. This means that although there may be 14 areas to assess for English Language Arts, your child will only have one box filled in for the third trimester. The one box will either have a C, PC, or IC, not a number. I have provided a picture as a reference.
Similar to the first two trimesters, the teachers will provide individual comments in the comments section of the report card. The comments will focus on their remote learning experience which will include, but not be limited to their participation in Google Meets, the student's response to teacher feedback through Google Classroom, the completion of assignments, and the quality of the individual work turned in.
I want to emphasize that the trimester grades are a small part of your child's LAF experience. The teachers and I know that these marks may not be a true indication of your child's individual learning and may not truly capture their level of understanding. This system is designed to give credit to students. It is not meant to add additional stress to your family life. Continue to do the best your family can do and reach out if you need support. Know that when we return to school, we will meet every child where they are to assist in continued success.
If you should have any questions regarding the grading information that I presented above, please feel free to reach out via email crusso@chatham-nj.org.
Please let your children know that we are all very proud of the work they have been doing at home, and I am missing the joy that they brought to each other and the LAF community every day.
Best,
Cheryl
