Cougar Connection
St. Columba Catholic School - News every Friday - 10/2/20
Hard to believe it is October already! I talked to a couple of students this morning that were so proud that they decorated for Halloween that it got me in the Fall spirit, despite the heat! I've seen some Halloween themed masks and it is great to see the kids enjoying the season!
We have successfully completed 4 weeks of on campus learning! I am so proud of how our community has taken care of each other and that we have no positive COVID cases. We have seen our school grow over this past month and we now have nearly 180 students in our K-8 school and nearly 40 students in our Preschool and Pre-K! We are truly blessed!
If anyone reads the San Diego Union Tribune, keep an eye out on the Sunday Paper (10/4), our school is going to be highlighted in an article about how families are making the switch from public to Catholic school! Go Cougars!
I know some of you had questions about grades after they went out last week. Please remember that our focus is your child's learning and their growth and progress toward mastery of the standards. The grades do look different, but we hope they are providing you with a lot more information. I will be hosting a session about Standards-Referenced Grades as we get closer to Report Card time at the end of the month.
Hopefully the weather is returning more to normal "Fall" weather. Next week, only Monday will be a half day for our K-8 students. Tuesday-Friday will all be full days.
Here is a look ahead at the upcoming events on campus:
- Monday, October 5: K-8 Half Day, K-8 Blessing of the Animals (See Below)
- Tuesday, October 6:
- Wednesday, October 7: St. Columba Spirit Day (See Info Below)
- Thursday, October 8:
- Friday, October 9:
Blessings,
Mr. Amann
Blessing of the Animals (Virtually!)
Sunday, October 4th is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. Normally, it is a tradition at St. Columba to celebrate St. Francis' feast day with a Blessing of the Animals. Our students bring their pets and we gather in the courtyard to have them blessed.
Because we cannot gather together with all classes and families together, we will do a virtual blessing.
During our Monday morning assembly at 8:20am, Fr. Rolando will join Student Council and will bless our pets and animals virtually.
In order to do so, students with pets or animals should bring in a picture (real or hand drawn) of their pets so that Father can virtually bless them.
For our students at home, if you would like to join, please see the Zoom info below.

St. Columba Spirit Day!
On Wednesday, October 7th, Student Council is hosting a Spirit Day!
Student Council thinks Mr. Amann's birthday is a great day to have a Spirit Day, and he is happy to support some St. Columba Spirit!
On Wednesday, students may wear any St. Columba swag or green and yellow clothing. This includes hats, socks, necklaces, etc. Show off that St. Columba pride!
The teachers will be taking class photos, so be sure to wear your Cougar gear and Cougar colors proud!
We will also be hosting some Minute to Win It games in the classroom in the afternoon! Our online students will be able to join too!
Go Cougars!
Beginning of Year Forms
We are really slacking in this area! We need these forms back ASAP!
We had a Fire Drill on Tuesday and almost half of our students did not have Emergency Information turned in. Please see the attached packet and return it, along with Comfort Bags, ASAP!!
Needed: Room Parents!
If you are looking for a way to get involved, we need some great Room Parents!
Each class traditionally has a parent that partners with the teacher and the PTG Board to coordinate events and activities and provide extra support.
If you are interested, please email Andi Barber, our Head Room Parent, at andibarber@gmail.com.
It will be first come, first serve and we already have 2nd grade and 7th grade accounted for. If you were the room parent last year, we are not assuming that you do or do not want to continue, so please be sure to reach out to Andi.
Thanks!
PE Uniform Clarification
On the day(s) that your child has PE, he/she should wear his/her PE Uniform.
This includes half days even if your child will not have PE because it is usually in the afternoon.
We recognize that parents purchase a set amount of uniforms and don't want to cause any confusion or hassle.
3rd-5th Grade Engineering Design Process
The past couple of weeks, our 3rd-5th Grade students have been learning with Mrs. Bunker about the Engineering Design Process. For some classes, they engineered new rooms that they designed and then built and in other classes, they made parachutes to protect eggs when falling. For all grades, they planned, made prototypes, and are tested their designs.

Uniform Reminders
A couple of Uniform related reminders:
1.) It is expected that all students have the correct uniform by October 12th. Please ensure you are ordering your uniforms in a timely manner.
2.) We are seeing A LOT of non-uniform shoes and socks. Please remember that shoes should be all black, all white, or a combination of black and white. We are seeing shoes of ALL colors and designs. Socks should be solid navy, white, or black without logos. It is expected that the correct shoes and socks shall be worn by October 12th.
