The Pershing Elementary Weekly Newsletter
Ready to ROAR Panthers? Let's Have an Awesome 1st Full Week!
Hello Pershing Families,
Two days of school are under our belts and 178 more days of school to look forward to for this year! I want to thank our families and staff for working together to get Chromebooks and student materials into the hands of our students. For those few who still need materials, please come to our school office anytime between 8:30a.m. - 3:30p.m., or call for an appointment 916-979-8076.
Our staff had a very busy start of school, which began with two solid days of professional development (12 hours of training) and countless hours spent planning and preparing materials, schedules, lessons and activities. Many of our staff worked throughout the summer learning new tools and strategies to support student engagement, and they are excited to put those strategies and tools to use.
Some families have expressed confusion or concern regarding daily Zoom meetings and requirements for Distance Learning. Please remember that tomorrow is day 3 and school has just begun. Previously, when school is in person, teachers spend a lot of time those first days and weeks setting up expectations, getting to know the whole class of students, and helping students to get to know one another. Starting a school year off in Distance Learning is VERY different from what occurred last March, as teachers and students already knew one another last spring.
The process of building that rapport with our students is incredibly important, now more than ever. Please know that live synchronous instruction during Zoom meetings are our first opportunity to connect with students and to support them, but it is just one component of how learning takes place. Teachers have spent many hours researching and building assignments that students can also do to support learning "asynchronously." As we begin, we do want your feedback and to know how distance learning instructional plans are working for your child. Please give staff time to settle into a few routines with students before rushing to judgment that strategies and approaches are not working, not enough or even too much. We realize each child is unique and different, which is why our partnership together is critical. As we begin and get to know your child better, please share information with your child's teacher about your child's interests, needs and learning styles as that will help teachers to be appropriately responsive.
Thank you, families, for your support, your positive words of encouragement and your collaborative partnership! Despite all the challenges distance learning presents to us all, we will learn together how to support our children so they can continue to be successful and a solid path towards a bright future! I look forward to seeing many of you in our future PTO meetings, at Back-to-School Night on Zoom, and in other settings, partnering to support your child.
Mrs. Kendra Shelton

Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council
The superintendent and senior district staff meet with a parent advisory committee at least four times per year to discuss current topics, issues and collect feedback. Each school principal selects a member of their parent community to represent the school at SPAC meetings. The only requirement is that you are a current parent at the school you represent. If you have an interest in serving on the SPAC, please email Principal Kendra Shelton by Friday, August 28.
The Pershing PTO is a great group of motivated parents, family members of Pershing students and Pershing staff who work together for the benefit of our students and school community. Please consider joining this year by becoming an official member! Visit pto4pershing.com for additional information or attend the next PTO meeting on September 14th at 6p.m. - 7:30p.m.
Do people comment that you are a positive person, organized and motivated? We are seeking interested parents to help take on important PTO leadership roles on the PTO Board. If you are a parent who is ready to blend our past practices with fresh new ideas, reach out to our outgoing president to put your name on the slate by emailing Krystal R. at firstname.lastname@example.org! More info to come for access to the Zoom meeting link.
