Hello Battle Creek Families
I have continued to enjoy my time back at Battle Creek and am settling in as Principal. Some of my favorite things about being back here is interacting with your children in the morning as they come in, as well as my one-on-one interactions when they tell me funny stories and anecdotes. And of course, the learning that is taking place. Our students are getting back into the rhythm of school.
I am really looking forward to Random Acts of Kindness week next week. During the morning announcement, I challenged all students to think of people that may not expect an act of kindness from them. This might be an opportunity for fun conversations at home to hear what creative ideas your children can come up with.

Hola familias de Battle Creek
Continué disfrutando mi tiempo en Battle Creek y me estoy instalando como directora. As Youtube personality Kid President once said, “Love changes everything, so fill the world with it.” We plan to do just that here at Battle Creek during the month of February, particularly during Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) week February 14th through February 17th by focusing on kindness, compassion, and empathy during Social/Emotional time and going on Kindness Missions around our school!

Calling all parent volunteers!
Battle Creek needs your help getting Mileage Club up and running! This gives kids the opportunity to run, walk or jog around the track during their lunch recess while earning charms and other great prizes. Please consider signing up during a lunch time and come enjoy some fun with the students. Volunteer description is picking up rolling cart with student’s punch cards and taking out to the track. Supporting and punching mileage cards for each lap a student completes.
Times needed are:

1st & 2nd 10:45-11:05
3rd 11:30-11:50
4th 11:45-12:05
5th 12:00-12:20

Salem-Keizer Public Schools is partnering with members in the community to provide a series of learning sessions throughout the 2021-22 school year. These sessions are currently held online and are open to the public.
The second Community Learning Session is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, January 31 and will be hosted by Salem-Keizer School Board Chair Osvaldo Avila and SKPS Director of Student Equity, Access and Advancement, Cynthia Richardson.

As we begin to see cooler temperatures throughout our community, it’s important to know how SKPS will communicate in the event of a school closure or delay. In the event of bad weather, district officials will make the decision by 5:15 a.m. that day to close schools or to delay the start of school.

Current fifth grade students (entering sixth grade in September) who want to attend a school other than their assigned school next fall (2022-2023 school year) must apply for in-district transfer (IDT) between March 1 and March 31, 2021.
IDT applications received after March 31, 2021 will not be considered.
IDT request forms can be picked up at any middle school office, and must be completed and returned to the student’s assigned middle school during the application date window. There is no guarantee a transfer request will be approved. Students attending school on an IDT are not eligible for bus transportation.

Reminders About Traffic Around Our School | Recordatorios sobre el tráfico alrededor de nuestra escuela
It’s a new school year and a good time to share a few reminders about traffic around the school.
Students, parents, buses, staff and school neighbors all share the same travel routes through the neighborhood to and from the school. Peak travel times can create congestion and increase the need for safe and courteous travel practices.
Here are a few ways parents can help us create a safe, respectful and positive environment when driving near the school:
- Please drive slowly. Remember, the speed limit in a school zone when lights are flashing is 20 miles per hour.
- Please don’t park in neighbors’ driveways at any time, even if the driveway is open.
- Don’t block streets, stop in intersections or crosswalks, and please obey crossing guards’ instructions.
- Remind children to stop and look both ways before crossing streets, and to respect neighbors’ property – for example, don’t make shortcuts through neighbors’ yards.
- When lining up to pick-up or drop-off students, leave at least three feet of space between your car and the nearest driveway opening.
- Avoid lining up early for pick-up or drop-off to help minimize congestion.
- Don’t drive in bus lanes, even if no buses are present.

It has the functions of both Remind and SchoolMessenger and will eventually replace both platforms. It also includes appointment scheduling options, which may be very helpful for conference sign ups.
It is very important that parents keep their contact information current.
Be sure to let your school office know if you have a new address, email or phone number.
The parent or guardian marked as the primary contact in the student information system will receive automated communication.
Messages will also be sent to the student’s home phone number contained in the database, if different from the primary contact phone number.
