Skipping breakfast makes it harder for kids to concentrate at school. Tempt your child to eat a healthy morning meal with nontraditional breakfast foods. Try toasted cheese with a side of apple slices or a whole-grain wrap with turkey and veggies, for example.

Sharing your expectations makes it more likely your child will meet them. Weave them into everyday conversations. For instance, “Let’s play a video game after your homework is done” sends the message that homework comes first and you expect it to be finished.

One missing paper can have a big impact. Let your child add up his grades for a class and then divide to find his average. Replace one grade with 0 and have him compare the outcomes. He’ll see the difference that one grade makes.

Hang a world map on the wall and use it to track world news stories. Keep some “sticky flags” on hand, and let your youngster use them to mark places she hears about. Suggest choosing one color of flag to use for places she wants to visit someday.

Prep your teen for holiday gatherings by talking about ways to show respect. You might suggest that he look relatives in the eye while talking to them and answer questions politely. Remind him that showing interest and asking questions is respectful, too.

Giving clear explanations is a communication skill your youngster needs when speaking and writing. One way to practice is by letting your tween or teen teach YOU something like how to play the latest game or prepare a snack recipe she dreamed up.
