What's Really Important In Our School

We can talk about reading, writing, math, social studies and science. All are very important parts of what we do at school, but in my opinion, the most important type of learning your children will get from our school and our teachers is what we call SEL (Social and Emotional Learning). There can be five behavioral competencies related to SEL and those are:

  • Self-awareness - this includes labeling one's feelings and having an accurate understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Self-management - this includes managing your emotions, delaying gratification, managing stress, and setting goals and then working toward them.
  • Social Awareness - this includes the ability to empathize with others.
  • Relationship Skills - being able to listen and communicate clearly and also collaborate with others.
  • Responsible decision-making - this involves making ethical choices based on consideration of feelings, goals, outcomes and your plan.

Ultimately, it is a combination of academic, social and emotional competence that prepares students for the complex world that we live in. Employers seek out skills that are taught through social-emotional learning. Ultimately, those who are socially and emotionally stable with live happier lives. (Dusenbury, Weissberg, and Meyers).

Fall Festival and Trunk Or Treat - Friday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 PM

Slackwood PTO is holding our annual Fall Festival on Friday, October 21 at 6:30 PM. This year they've included a fun Trunk or Treat to be held in the back blacktop. The cost is $5 now with registration, $7 on the day of the event. There will be story telling, cookie decorating, face painting, and more fun activities and games. The event will end with cars decorated for Halloween where students can "Trunk or Treat." Students may wear costumes or just come as they are. It should be a "spook"tacular time!

The Lawrence Township Police Dept. will also be holding their Trunk or Treat on October 27 in the High School Parking Lot
