NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

12 August 2021

Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Dear Parents and Staff

Tomorrow morning at 8.45am our Year Three to Six children will attend Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption which commemorates Mary, the mother of Jesus, being taken Body and Soul to Heaven. Our school has a close relationship with Mary as our School and Parish name, Notre Dame, translates to “Our Lady” and we are guided by her example as the basis for all that we do. One of the first prayers that most of us learnt was the Hail Mary, and it is through this that we ask for her assistance as we encounter the challenges of life. During these times of uncertainty and concern let us not lose sight of the power of prayer and the comfort that we can find in asking Mary to advocate for us. Each Tuesday morning a group of staff gather to recite a decade of the Rosary as a time of reflection and redirection. Perhaps you, too, might find the time during the busyness of your day or week to reflect, be still and enjoy the warmth of allowing Mary to share your worries and concerns.

YEAR 1 CLASS NEWS

Kiya! Our term started with a bang with 1M presenting an amazing assembly about First Nation Peoples. To follow on, during our NAIDOC Week celebration, our class each wrote a prayer to contribute to our school prayer book. We focussed on our connection to country, especially Dadirri, encouraging us to slow down, listen and connect to where we are.

Parents look out! Your children might convince you to let them stay up late, watch more television, play all day on devices or even eat more vegetables as we are beginning to learn how to write a persuasive argument! Persuasive writing means having an opinion on a topic and trying to convince the reader to agree with you.

In Maths we have looked at place value and patterns. We are whizzes at skip counting by 2, 5 and 10.

Makerspace has begun this term and we spent our first week making weather recording devices. One of our activities will incorporate what we have made in a school weather report using the green screen app. We are having so much fun learning about technologies.

We loved watching the Olympics and learning some interesting facts about Japan. One of these facts is that the art of folding paper, which is called origami, is traditionally associated with Japan. We did some origami, making fish and dogs. We are looking forward to the Paralympics starting soon.

LIBRARY NEWS

Big picture

This year’s Book Week theme is: "Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds."

Books have the ability to transform and inform, encourage creativity, and inspire and challenge us to make new connections. This is the perfect opportunity for readers to set their minds free and roam among the wild world of books while celebrating all the best things about books and reading.

Our school library has purchased some of the new and popular books that are being read around Australia during Children’s Book Week. Your child will listen to these new stories in Book Week and have the opportunity to borrow them too.

Book Week activities will be held in the official Book Week dates from the 21-27 August. These activities will be hosted by the Year 6 Library Monitors.

Fume Free Fridays

We will be continuing to push on with our active travel day scheduled for Fridays this term. We want to see as many students walking or riding to school. Any student who chooses this option will receive a star card where they will get this punched by a Year 6 helper. These will then be put into a draw at the end of the term for some fantastic prizes. We will also be doing ‘random’ star card days throughout the term. There will also be the opportunity for different activities and rewards for students who choose active travel throughout the term.

Walking School Bus

If you are interested or already taking part in a ‘Walking School Bus’ then please contact me. We currently have one running from Centenary Park but I’d love to hear from families who are already running this with other families, as well as those who may be interested in starting one up. The Centenary Park ‘Walking School Bus’ is scheduled on Friday mornings.

'Kids need to grow up knowing that they own their own bodies and nobody should be touching them without their consent. This is something that has to be explicitly taught to them by parents, otherwise they might not understand that they’re allowed to decline touch, especially from adults.'
