Jesmond Public School
Jesmond Journal Term 1 Week 9, 21st March 2023
Principal's Message
Congratulations to our NAPLAN students!
I am incredibly proud of Year 3 & 5 for completing NAPLAN over the last 4 days. They engaged in this assessment, showing determination and grit.
During this term, the staff have focused on explicit teaching and reviewing strands in the English and mathematics curriculum to build student mastery of skills and strategies. Specialised staff have worked with small Intervention groups to practice areas of learning that students need further development.

Harmony Day - Everyone Belongs
Tomorrow we will be celebrating Harmony Day at Jesmond Public School. A day to celebrate multiculturalism. It is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. We will be holding a Multicultural Day where students will participate in a range of workshops learning about different cultures from around the world. A sushi lunch will be delivered to those who have preordered. We're looking forward to seeing everyone dressed in their traditional cultural clothing or the colour orange!

Student Representative Council (SRC)
Our SRC were excited to share their ideas for fundraising during our first meeting for the year. Class representatives have been discussing ideas with their class so that fundraising events can be decided at our next meeting. Some ideas include, ice cream day, out of uniform day, sausage sizzle, pyjama day, pizza meal day, teddy bear day and dress as your favourite athlete day.
The SRC have also been discussing changes to our 1, 2, 3 behaviour system to introduce rewards for students who are displaying positive behaviour. This will be introduced in Term 2.
K-2 Curriculum Reform
Our K-2 teachers have had a busy start to the year implementing and teaching the new English and mathematics curriculum. Across K-6, throughout the year, we will continue to have a strong focus on professional learning and resource development for the new curriculum. The new 3-6 English and mathematics curriculum will be implemented next year.
Last Monday, our K-2 team participated in their first whole day of curriculum reform professional learning with our Assistant Principal, Curriculum & Instruction. Our K-2 team were presented with the latest research and evidence-based practices for the teaching of writing, they analysed students’ writing samples and collaborated on learning goals and units of work. Our team then undertook training on how to formatively assess students in mathematics, using the new syllabus.
Our Years 3-6 team will have their curriculum reform days next week.

3/4D
Throughout Term 1 in 3/4D, we have been working diligently in all areas of learning. In Mathematics we have been using hands on materials to learn about fractions, time and chance and probability. For Harmony Day, we are writing an information report to inform our teachers and our classmates about our cultures. 3/4D have enjoyed learning new kicking and catching skills during our AFL sessions.

3/4O
3/4O students have had an excellent start to 2023! They have engaged in learning opportunities that have challenged them to take risks and build on their skills. They have developed a deep understanding of the features of imaginative and persuasive texts and become professionals at AFL during PDHPE lessons! Students have engaged in science experiments focusing on light, heat and electrical energy.

3/4P
3/4P have had a wonderful start to the year. In English we have been learning to distinguish between types of texts and identify their distinctive features. In mathematics we have enjoyed hands-on learning experiences exploring 3D objects, length, area and chance.
This term, in PDH we have been exploring what it means to be resilient and completing some beautiful artworks to support our understanding.
We are all very excited to see what is in store for the rest of the year.

I am an extremely proud principal of the Jesmond Public School community!!!

Big Vegie Crunch
On Thursday 30th March, Jesmond Public School will be taking part in the Big Vegie Crunch. This event attempts to break the record for the highest number of children eating vegetables simultaneously – and to get kids excited about vegetables! We ask that students bring along a vegetable for their morning crunch and sip instead of their usual fruit break.
