ELA News and Updates
Katie Nicholls katie.nicholls@yorkville.k12.wi.us
This week in ELA, students experienced their first discussion circle. Discussion circles are modeled after Socratic Circles. Students wrote open ended questions to discuss the novel No Promises in the Wind. The circles are student led discussions, so it’s always exciting to see what students want to discuss regarding what we are reading. I look forward to the next discussion circle opportunity as the students did a fantastic job. Another focus this week was characterization. Students completed a chart looking deeper into our main character, Josh. They also looked at how authors reveal aspects of characters to allow the readers to formulate opinions of characters. I hope all students and families have an opportunity to enjoy the fall break!

Students worked on learning the functions of cell organelles this week and we began our cell city project. During this project, students will come up with analogies for cell organelles and match them to city structures. They were able to choose their own groups of two or three to complete this project as it may require some time out of the classroom. Their choices are to create a poster, a 3-D model or a video of the cell city. Videos may include Minecraft or other world building games. This project is due November 8th. Students will also have the chapter 3 section 2 quiz next Friday Nov. 4th which will be on organelles and their functions.
Have a great weekend!

This week in 8th grade Civics we looked at lesson 4 of Chapter 3 which focused on the five principles the framers used to help build the constitution. We discussed each one and looked at examples of how each one works. Then we finished up by looking at the constitution and what makes its such a valuable document. With this being the end of Chapter 3 we will take a test over the Chapter next wednesday. Students will have a studyguide, guided reading packets, self check quizzes, and the essay question to help prepare them for the test. Please encourage your child to spend just a few minutes a day looking over the chapter. Have a great long weekend. Mr. Johnsen
